Workout Planning
Although savvy business travelers are accustomed to hopping on a plane any day of the week, the constant changes in schedule and limited nutritious options can hinder even the most dedicated professionals from maintaining their health while traveling. Fortunately, accessible workouts through on-demand streaming services and group fitness classes found on platforms like ClassPass simplify the process of staying fit on the go.
To explore how business travelers can effectively use ClassPass while on the move, GoTravelDaily connected with ClassPass CEO Fritz Lanman.
Healthy Travel Items
GoTravelDaily: What item do you always travel with to support your healthy habits?
Fritz Lanman: “I consistently bring a pair of lightweight sneakers and workout clothes, even if I doubt I’ll have time to work out. It serves as a reminder to prioritize my health. Moreover, if a fitness studio owner invites me to join for a session, I’m prepared. I also try to carry healthy snacks, such as lean proteins like grilled chicken or turkey and raw veggies like celery or carrots.”
Airport Food Options
What is your go-to airport or airplane food? What do you avoid?
“I strive to avoid beer and typical airplane meals. These meals tend to have excessive calorie counts and are filled with simple carbs, salt, and processed ingredients. Instead, I bring my own healthy snacks; in a pinch, I scout airport stores for beef jerky and string cheese, which are certainly more nutritious than airplane food!”
Flying Routine
Do you follow any specific routine when flying?
“Flights are among my most productive times. While in the air, I face fewer distractions, allowing me to tackle tasks that might otherwise interfere with my family time and personal interests like fly fishing and skiing. Before leaving the gate, I store emails and documents offline to ensure continued productivity despite limited airplane Wi-Fi. Often, by the time we reach cruising altitude, I have already addressed crucial emails and can complete various smaller tasks on my checklist. If I need downtime, I indulge in a good book.”
Exercise While Traveling
What is your favorite type of exercise to do while traveling for business?
“I have recently become quite interested in boxing, treadmill, and bootcamp classes. I also integrate weight training workouts at a gym twice a week. We’ve added the national chain Rumble to ClassPass, and I attended three classes in NYC last week—two boxing and one of their innovative ‘Train’ concepts, which combines treadmill and strength training. It’s an excellent workout. In San Francisco, I enjoy BodyRok or Core40 for reformer training, as well as Golden Gate Crossfit, Barry’s Bootcamp, and Crunch for traditional gym sessions!”
Networking While Working Out
How do you maintain balance when traveling for work, especially when networking events may arise?
“I recommend networking during workouts! Much of my work involves engaging with fitness entrepreneurs and active individuals, making it natural to invite them to join for a boxing class or a quick cardio session instead of a meeting over drinks. I encourage other professionals to adopt this approach: Invite a colleague to yoga or suggest a walking meeting with coffee in place of sitting at a café. This way, not only are you more active during the workday, but your meetings will also be more memorable.”
Advice for Maintaining Healthy Habits
What tips do you have for those looking to keep healthy habits while traveling but unsure where to start?
“If you already enjoy a specific type of class such as cycling or HIIT, leverage ClassPass to locate a studio in your travel destination. Your prior experience with that genre will help ease you into the new setting while allowing you to meet locals and explore unfamiliar neighborhoods—this balances novelty with comfort. Additionally, invite friends or colleagues to join you. Our app features tools that enable users to invite friends—whether they are current members or not—making workouts more enjoyable and motivating to maintain consistency.”
