11 Best Things to Do in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
Perched on the coastline of Jalisco state in Mexico, Puerto Vallarta has become increasingly popular over the last few decades; and for excellent reasons! The coastline is absolutely stunning, and there are many exciting activities dotted throughout the region.
Similar to other notable destinations in Mexico like Tulum and Cancun, Puerto Vallarta is a vibrant resort town offering a plethora of attractions. You’ll find beauty at every corner in this idyllic location, ensuring you have an unforgettable trip to Mexico.
To streamline your itinerary, here are the top activities and places to visit in Puerto Vallarta that you simply cannot miss, allowing you to spend less time planning and more time immersing yourself in the local culture.
1.) Bahía de Banderas
Bahía de Banderas is a must-visit if you are staying in Puerto Vallarta. It is one of the largest bays in the region where most hotels are conveniently located.
Don’t miss visiting Conchas Chinas Beach, an excellent spot for a day at the beach. Just a heads-up, you might want to bring your own parasol and sun loungers as rentals are rarely available on this beach.
Afterwards, head to Los Muertos Beach, where you can explore the vibrant promenade area of Puerto Vallarta. Spend the day lounging on the beach and enjoy a lively evening at bars and restaurants lining the coast. We particularly enjoyed dining at La Palapa Restaurant, especially for their sunset views, which are truly spectacular.
2.) Yelapa Falls Cruise
One of the top activities in Puerto Vallarta is booking a boat tour. We highly recommend this all-inclusive Yelapa Falls cruise.
This trip not only gives you access to the coastline but also plenty of time to swim near Yelapa Falls.
Additionally, you’ll enjoy an all-inclusive bar, delicious food, and more onboard. Make sure to secure your cruise tickets before you arrive in Puerto Vallarta as they tend to sell out quickly during peak times.
3.) Naval Museum of Puerto Vallarta
The Naval Museum of Mexico is a historical site that is truly worth a visit during your stay in Puerto Vallarta. Featuring over 150 exhibits, it provides a fascinating insight into the Mexican Navy and its historical development.
With several rooms containing interactive exhibits, including a collection of Mexican Navy uniforms from different eras, a visit takes around 45-60 minutes and is perfect for those interested in naval history. If that is not your cup of tea, you might prefer spending your time at the beach instead.
Also, keep in mind that the museum operates every day of the week except Mondays.
4.) Mismaloya Beach
Located south of Puerto Vallarta, Mismaloya Beach is well worth a visit if you’re exploring the coastline of Bahía de Banderas.
While it may not be as popular as other beaches in Puerto Vallarta, Mismaloya Beach offers incredible scenery and a quaint atmosphere.
While you’re there, jump on a boat tour with one of the local vendors on the beach and swing by Los Pescadores Restaurant for their famous ceviche—it’s delicious!
It’s worth noting that Mismaloya Beach can be quite small and may attract crowds depending on the season. If inviting a lively atmosphere is not your preference, consider other nearby and smaller beaches around Puerto Vallarta.
5.) Bucerías
Just north of Puerto Vallarta lies Bucerías, a charming beach town around Bahía de Banderas that’s ideal for a day trip.
Although the beach may not be wide, it stretches for miles and is perfect for renting a lounge chair, enjoying beachfront bars, or strolling through the charming streets.
If you’re hungry, make sure to visit Fat Boy Seafood for fresh fish. If you’re extending your stay, consider dinner at La Negra for an incredible ribeye taco experience.
6.) Zona Romantica
Situated along the southern coastline of Puerto Vallarta, Zona Romantica is a vibrant neighborhood brimming with bars, restaurants, and the famous Los Muertos Beach Pier.
This area also features Olas Altas Beach, offering easy access to relax and explore the local food scene. For a memorable dinner, try The Blue Shrimp, known for its delicious lobster tails. Alternatively, if you’re craving tacos, head over to Pancho’s Takos.
7.) Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe
Not far from the Naval Museum lies the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, a beautiful site steeped in local history and worth a visit.
Less than 100 years old, this stunning church can be viewed in about 20 minutes, making it an easy addition to your shoreline stroll.
Afterwards, for a delicious meal, head over to Coco’s Kitchen for some of the best chilaquiles in the area.
8.) Isla Cuale
When wandering through Puerto Vallarta, be sure to visit Isla Cuale. This charming little island can be reached via bridges and hosts several galleries, markets, and delightful eateries.
While there, check out the Cuale Island Flea Market, where you can haggle for unique souvenirs.
Afterwards, indulge at River Cafe, a fine dining spot in Puerto Vallarta, famous for its dishes (the mahi-mahi is a must-try). Just remember to make a reservation for dinner as tables fill up quickly.
9.) Palo Maria Waterfall
Located about a 35-minute drive from Puerto Vallarta, Palo Maria Waterfall is a worthwhile excursion if you’re seeking adventure away from the beaches. However, finding the trail can be challenging if you’re unfamiliar with the area.
Once you arrive, there are opportunities to swim and explore the surroundings. Just be cautious of the large spiders on the trail. We recommend visiting with a guide for the best experience.
10.) Los Aros
The Mismaloya Arches, found within Los Arcos National Marine Park, are stunning granite islands located just off the coast of Bahía de Banderas.
Sailing around these impressive formations is a picturesque experience, often incorporated into boat tours.
11.) Majahuitas Beach
If you’re in the mood for a more tranquil beach experience at Bahía de Banderas, consider heading to Majahuitas Beach. Accessible primarily by boat, this serene beach is the perfect spot for relaxation.
Many tours to Yelapa make a stop here for snorkeling. If you seek a full day of relaxation, you might want to charter your own boat, although it can be a bit pricey during peak seasons. Nevertheless, it’s one of the best experiences in Puerto Vallarta if you desire a day at sea.
12.) Jorullo Bridge
A short 35-minute drive from central Puerto Vallarta, Jorullo Bridge is an exciting spot for those looking for a more adventurous day out.
You can hike in the surrounding hills, but we recommend an exhilarating ATV tour that takes you through the trails of the Sierra Madre Occidental and across the Jorullo Bridge itself. To top off the adventure, enjoy some local tequila following your ride.
