Merida is an incredible city in Mexico to visit. Nestled on the Yucatan Peninsula, around 3-4 hours west of Cancun, Merida is gorgeous, with heaps of restaurants, historic buildings, and stunning neighborhoods to experience. There are countless activities in Merida that will fill any trip to the city. However, with such a diverse range of attractions, finding the best things to do can result in some tough choices!
Our time in Merida was unforgettable, and we’d revisit in a heartbeat. In fact, it may very well be my favorite city in all of Mexico!
1.) Cathedral of Mérida
Located in the heart of the historic center, the Cathedral of Mérida is a must-see while exploring the city. This beautiful architectural marvel has a rich history that dates back to the 1500s, making it one of the oldest cathedrals in the Americas. Visitors can explore the interior for free, which enhances the experience of this historical site.
While many modern cathedrals may overshadow local Mayan culture due to their Spanish heritage, the Cathedral of Mérida stands as a complex symbol of history. Its construction utilized stones from the ancient Maya Temple that formerly occupied its site, emphasizing the cultural tapestry of Merida.
Every Saturday at 8 pm, the area around the cathedral transforms for a fantastic reenactment of the traditional Maya Ballgame. As the streets close for this exciting performance, visitors should arrive early to secure a good spot. The event is free, providing a unique cultural insight into Merida’s Maya heritage.
2.) Plaza Grande
Just outside the Cathedral of Mérida is Plaza Grande, the city’s bustling main square. This vibrant plaza is perfect for exploring on foot, with a variety of restaurants, cafes, and bars surrounding it. Moreover, the wider historic center of Merida is known for its safety, making it easy to navigate without a guide.
This means an urban adventure is easily possible with Google Maps to guide you between must-see spots. For an immersive experience, don’t miss walking through the Pasaje de La Revolución and visiting the Palacio de Gobierno del Estado de Yucatán, which boasts beautiful murals and an impressive history.
3.) Merida Hotels
A good hotel plays a significant role in enhancing your experience during a city visit. While staying in Merida, we found some remarkable accommodations. Casa Olivia is a charming boutique hotel featuring only four guest rooms, making it an ideal little oasis in the hustle and bustle of the city. The team at Casa Olivia is welcoming, and their stunning central pool is a highlight.
While Casa Olivia may fall on the higher end of the price scale, the exquisite experience makes it worthwhile. Another stunning option is Decu Merida, a smaller hotel with fewer than ten rooms, also offering a charming courtyard and outdoor pool that creates a serene atmosphere in the city.
4.) Museo Casa Montejo
Bordering Plaza Grande, the Museo Casa Montejo showcases some of the opulent furniture and items dating back to the 1500s. This museum provides insight into the Spanish influence on Merida. It’s an enriching experience where visitors can enjoy the stunning interiors for free. However, a tiny caveat — it lacks extensive English-language information, so it’s beneficial to brush up on your Spanish beforehand.
5.) Restaurants in Merida
Merida is a culinary delight. In my opinion, it’s one of my top spots in Mexico for dining. With an exciting fusion of regional cuisines, the city is home to many fantastic eateries all within a walkable distance in the city center. For live music paired with hearty Mexican dishes, visit La Nagrita Cantina. This popular venue offers vibrant atmospheres and amazing cocktails.
To secure a seat close to the live music stage, it’s advisable to arrive early. La Nagrita Cantina typically fills up fast. For a quieter ambiance, Holoch offers both indoor and outdoor dining and is famous for its delicious frijol con puerco (Yucatan Style Black Beans with Pork) — a must-try!

6.) Chichen Itza
A two-hour drive from Merida, Chichen Itza is a must-visit day trip. Recognized as one of the most significant Maya sites globally, it’s home to the iconic Temple of Kukulcán (El Castillo). Sadly, visitors aren’t permitted to climb the pyramids, but you can explore the ancient ball courts where games were played thousands of years ago. To make your visit smooth, consider joining a guided tour that includes pickup from Merida. This ensures you maximize your time and avoid missing out.
Don’t forget to purchase your tickets before heading to Merida, especially during peak seasons when space runs out quickly!
7.) Uxmal
Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, Uxmal is located around 60 miles from Merida. It was once a thriving trading city for the Maya civilization, and today visitors can admire its many well-preserved architectural wonders. Similar to Chichen Itza, book this day trip from Merida for a guided exploration around Uxmal to enhance your experience.
While exploring, be sure to visit the Pyramid of the Magician, the Governor’s Palace, and the Quadrangle – all of which contribute significantly to Uxmal’s historical charm. Each structure offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich Mayan past that remains a highlight of any visit to Merida.
8.) Hacienda Mucuyché Cenote
For a unique cenote experience, head to the Hacienda Mucuyché, located approximately 40 minutes from Uxmal. This scenic spot is perfect for pairing with a visit to Uxmal. Additionally, it’s set in a historic hacienda site, offering informative tours before you take a refreshing dip in the cenote.
Be sure to pre-book your guided tour of Hacienda Mucuyché. Tours are primarily conducted in either Spanish or English, so arrangements should be made beforehand to secure your preferred language.
9.) Mayan World Museum of Mérida
On the outskirts of Merida, Mayan World Museum presents a comprehensive look at Maya culture and history and is definitely worth a visit. It’s regarded as one of the top attractions in Merida for gaining insights into Maya heritage and the impact of Spanish colonialism.
While a small entrance fee applies (around $10 USD), spending approximately 90 minutes to explore offers valuable learning opportunities about the Maya civilization.
10.) Palacio de la Música
Just a 5-minute walk from Plaza Grande, the Palacio de la Música provides an engaging exploration into Mexican music and its history across the Yucatán Peninsula. For music enthusiasts, this museum is a delightful stop. However, if you’re not particularly keen on musical history, you might want to skip this visit.
11.) Paseo de Montejo
Paseo de Montejo is one of Merida’s renowned streets, celebrated for its grandeur and historic architecture. A leisurely stroll along this long avenue will reveal some of the city’s most impressive buildings—perfect for those eager to explore Merida’s architectural splendor.
Begin your journey at the Monument to the Fatherland, then stroll south toward the heart of Paseo de Montejo. Along the way, you’ll encounter beautiful sites like the twin houses (Casas Gemelas), the museum Quintas Montes Molina, and Palacio Cantón. Budget approximately three hours to wander leisurely and fully enjoy the architecture and history encapsulated along this lovely avenue.
12.) Celestun
If you’re up for a coastal adventure, consider exploring Celestun. This pristine beach features the stunning Ria Celestún Biosphere Reserve, home to iconic pink flamingos. You can take a boat tour around the reserve, providing a fantastic opportunity to see the wildlife up close.
A trip to Celestun is among the top things to do in Merida for day excursions, especially since it’s a vital habitat for flamingoes north of the equator. Don’t forget to plan and book your trip beforehand!
