Lisbon is, in my opinion, one of the best European cities to visit. Not only is it utterly stunning, but there’s an abundance of the best places to see in Lisbon scattered throughout all the neighborhoods. Moreover, you have enchanting spots like Sintra merely a stone’s throw from the city itself.

Furthermore, Lisbon is the kind of city that you can enjoy for a long weekend (or even longer) while still experiencing a diverse and incredible atmosphere.

Having visited Lisbon multiple times, we have come to understand that a bit of planning can greatly enhance your experiences in the city. The city is particularly notable for its hilly neighborhoods, which can easily lead to missed insights without a structured approach. However, navigating can be enjoyable if you embrace the city’s charm while wandering.

In light of this, I am eager to share some of the best places to see in Lisbon during your upcoming trip. It’s a remarkable city with countless opportunities for exploration.

1.) Visit Torre de Belém (Belem Tower)

Located on the scenic coast, Lisbon’s UNESCO World Heritage Site of Belém is over 500 years old. It serves as one of the best spots to visit in Lisbon, and you cannot overlook it while strolling along the shoreline.

If you wish to go inside, aim for an early visit. Queues can accumulate quickly, especially during weekends. Thus, to optimize your experience and minimize waiting time, plan to arrive at the tower first thing in the morning.

After visiting the tower, don’t miss the chance to traverse Lisbon’s picturesque coastal routes. Depending on your stroll’s distance, you can even venture towards Gare de Oriente and beyond. It’s a splendid way to spend some hours along the promenade while exploring this segment of Lisbon.

2.) Explore Castelo de São Jorge (St George’s Castle)

As one of Lisbon’s most prominent landmarks with over a millennium of history, Castelo de São Jorge cannot be missed.

I recommend visiting around sunset when the castle offers breathtaking views over the city—an optimal time for watching the sun go down. Additionally, the quaint streets of the Alfama neighborhood are easily traversed afterward.

As the birthplace of the original Piri-Piri chicken, Lisbon is a paradise for food lovers, boasting a plethora of delicious dining options.

Once you’re in the city, seek out one of the local spots that serve the freshest and most flavorful piri-piri offerings. If you’re a fan of spice, don’t hesitate to ask for extra hot. And be sure to have some Piri-Piri oil on the table—it’s absolutely delicious.

Upon arrival, enjoy a leisurely stroll through the narrow streets, admire the iconic blue-tiled houses, and explore the quaint artist studios, cafes, restaurants, and shops that line this beautiful neighborhood. It’s a captivating experience filled with rich history.

And don’t forget to stop by Sé Cathedral while exploring.

6.) Padrão dos Descobrimentos

Lisbon served as a launching point for numerous ships and explorations during the ‘age of discovery’. The Tribute To The Age Of Discovery is one of the iconic spots in the city, symbolizing this remarkable time in history.

This colossal structure looms over the banks of the river Tagus, becoming a significant feature of the waterfront. If you desire an inside view, consider taking the elevator to gain panoramic sights of the surrounding area!

Similar to Paris’ Eiffel Tower or New York’s Statue of Liberty, Lisbon boasts the Elevador de Santa Justa, an easily identifiable landmark that can’t be overlooked.
