The beautiful little island of St Kitts is one I’d been looking forward to visiting for a while. The journey to explore this stunning Caribbean destination was filled with anticipation.
St Kitts presents a unique Caribbean experience, partly due to its relatively untouched beauty compared to more well-known islands.
St Kitts neighbors popular destinations like Antigua, often making it a secondary choice for travelers. However, the transfer between the two islands is seamless, allowing visitors to enjoy St Kitts directly.
The island has historically focused on agriculture, particularly sugar production. Consequently, it offers a genuine glimpse into local life, far removed from the resort experience often found in the Caribbean.
Upon arrival, we headed straight to Basseterre, where we checked into the Ocean Terrace Inn—the first locally owned hotel in St Kitts.
After settling in, we eagerly ventured out for dinner. A local suggestion pointed us to the Fisherman’s Wharf restaurant, where we enjoyed our first taste of authentic Kittitian cuisine.
Our arrival coincided with barbecue night, featuring fresh lobsters, ribs, and various local dishes—a truly delightful introduction to Caribbean food!
The next morning, we rose early, feeling energized amidst the four-hour time difference with London.
Breakfast at Ocean Terrace Inn included a delicious omelette—definitely recommended with hot sauce!
On our way to the Wingfield Estate, we took a brief stop to view ancient petroglyphs created by the Carib Indians, the island’s original inhabitants.
The Wingfield Estate is a historic plantation that gives a glimpse into the island’s agricultural past, focusing heavily on sugar cane cultivation—a significant aspect of its economy.
Interestingly, I realized for the first time why rum is a popular drink in the Caribbean—it’s a byproduct of sugar production!
Rather than waste, molasses were used to produce rum, which has an interesting historical context related to the island’s colonial past.
After leaving the estate, we took a moment to visit a river known for a tragic historical event—where many Carib Indians lost their lives, leading to the area being named “Bloody River.”
Following these historical insights, we made our way to Reggae Beach, with a stop at Timothy Hill, which provides stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the calm Caribbean Sea on the other.
Diving into the beach experience, we quickly settled into the tranquility of Reggae Beach, enjoying the vibrant atmosphere and delicious food specials.
The perfect combination of food, rum punches, and beach vibes made for a unforgettable day on St Kitts.
With so much history and vibrant culture to absorb, it truly enriched our travel experience in St Kitts.
Stay tuned for more insights into our adventures in this beautiful destination!
