Exploring The Coast And Ciutadella In Menorca, Spain
We arrived in Menorca from London late at night. Consequently, I did not get to see much of the island on the way to our hotel, the brilliant Hotel Artiem Audax. We went straight for dinner and then fell asleep shortly after.
The following morning revealed an unexpected yet breathtaking view of Menorca’s light blue waters set against steep cliffs. This sight heightened my excitement and hinted at the beauty and charm this island had to offer.
After enjoying a hearty breakfast, we made our way to Es Grau, where we rented a tandem kayak from Menorca en Kayak. Our morning was filled with the joy of paddling through coves, each offering a unique perspective of the island’s scenic beauty.
Along the journey, we encountered caves that once sheltered locals in the island’s hippie days, showcasing unusual carvings in the rocks, giving us a fascinating glimpse into Menorca’s history. It was an incredibly fun experience!
As the day progressed, we ate lunch at Es Moli des Raco, a delightful restaurant located in a windmill in Es Mercadal, known for its delicious tapas-style dishes that celebrated the local flavors.
Post-lunch, we made our way to Monte Toro, the island’s highest mountain, to savor the spectacular views of the Menorcan countryside. The landscape was nothing short of stunning!
At the top, we discovered the Sanctuary of the Verge del Toro, a gothic church steeped in history and architectural charm. Therefore, our visit was enriched with cultural insights.
Next, we headed to the ancient site of Naveta d’es Tudons, an archaeological wonder dating over 3,000 years old. These tombs present a historical mystery as no one really knows who built them or their origins.
Moving forward, we visited Ciutadella de Menorca, a charming Spanish town sitting atop a hill. The town is filled with beautiful alleyways, vibrant churches, and quaint shops, making it a great place to explore.
The town’s beauty fosters a relaxed ambiance, ideal for leisurely strolls and delightful discoveries. As we meandered through its picturesque streets, the local life flourished under the warmth of the sunshine.
As twilight approached, we enjoyed a fantastic dinner at a harbor restaurant, immersing ourselves in the local dining experience that showcased the culinary delights of Menorca. More details on that will follow in our next post!
In conclusion, our exploration of Menorca was filled with stunning views, exhilarating activities, and delightful culinary experiences, reinforcing why this island is a remarkable destination.
