Packing Tips

Think about the weather: Check the weather in your destination in the days leading up to your trip to help determine your packing strategy.

Check if your accommodation offers laundry: Staying in a vacation rental? See if the home has a washer and dryer. In a hotel? Inquire about laundry services. This could help you cut down on what you need so you can pack less and wash throughout your trip.

Pack in a single color palette: To reduce your luggage, try packing all your clothes in a single color palette so everything can easily mix and match.

Edit before you go: Lay out what you want to pack, then walk away for at least a few hours. Go back and ask yourself, “do I really need this?” about every item.

What to Pack in Checked Luggage

Toiletries: Regardless of the length of your trip, you’ll need some toiletries. In your toiletry bag, include a toothbrush, toothpaste, face and body soap, deodorant, shampoo and conditioner, a hairbrush, sunscreen, and any makeup you may want. Don’t forget hair styling tools and products if you use those too.

First aid and medications: Take prescription medications and any over-the-counter medicines you may need. If you have space, consider bringing a small bag of first-aid items including a few bandaids, hand sanitizer, pain relievers, tweezers, and alcohol wipes.

Footwear: Before you travel, think about every situation you’ll encounter during your trip. This will help you determine your footwear needs. Packing comfortable sneakers for urban exploration, dress shoes for going out, and sturdy boots for hiking is essential. However, only bring what you need, as shoes can significantly occupy valuable space.

Socks: Bring a pair for every day of your travels. Roll or fold them and place them into your packed shoes to save space.

Underwear: Avoid the temptation to overpack “just in case” underwear. Aim for one pair for every day you’re away.

Pants: Consider your destination’s climate. If you’re going somewhere warm, pack a loose pair of slacks, while jeans work well for colder regions. Aim to bring one or two pairs of versatile travel pants that match multiple tops.

Shorts: If your destination is warm, ensure you pack at least one pair of shorts to stay cool.

Dresses or slacks: For planned nice dinners or evenings out, pack one fancier item to feel your best. Consider using a garment bag to keep it fresh, or bring a portable steamer to maintain its condition upon arrival.

T-shirts: For warm getaways, pack two or three t-shirts depending on the duration of your vacation (don’t worry about repeating outfits).

Cold-weather clothes: For colder trips, include warm clothes, such as long-sleeve tops, sweaters, or sweatshirts. Wear your jacket, gloves, hat, and scarf on the plane to conserve luggage space.

Sleepwear: Don’t overlook packing pajamas. A single pair (or two) should suffice.

Swimwear: If your vacation includes a pool, hot tub, or the ocean, remember to pack swimwear and a cover-up.

Jewelry: Bring any jewelry you wish to complement your outfits. If you’re hesitant about packing your real engagement or wedding ring, consider bringing a less expensive alternative.

What to Pack in Carry-on Luggage

Electronics: Your carry-on bag should contain anything you need during your flight. This may include a laptop for work if you’re on a business trip, a cell phone for connectivity, or an e-reader. Ensure you also pack the necessary chargers.

Emergency medications: Bring at least two days’ worth of medications to have access to what you might need in case your checked baggage gets lost.

Travel documents and identification: Keep your ticket information handy, both digitally and in printed form, alongside directions to your accommodation and any pertinent visa details. Additionally, bring your passport and another ID for international trips, along with a credit card and some cash for emergencies.

Face mask: While masks may not be a requirement on many airlines, having one on hand is wise for extra protection or compliance with destination regulations.

Sunglasses or reading glasses: Don’t forget your sunglasses and any necessary eyewear, including an extra pair of contacts in a portable case.

What to Do Before You Leave for a Trip

Alert your credit card or bank: Most institutions enable you to notify them of your travel plans through their app or websites. Alternatively, call them to ensure uninterrupted access while traveling.

Check your cell phone plan: Confirm that your mobile plan covers travel necessities without incurring excessive roaming fees.

Confirm your reservations: Double-check that all your reservations are secure to avoid any inconveniences upon arrival.

Take out the trash and tidy your home: Dispose of trash, including leftovers, and do a quick clean-up to return to a fresh space.

Set up security or inform a neighbor: If you have a security service, set their alerts. Alternatively, tell a trusted neighbor your plans so they can monitor your home. It’s an added bonus if they can collect your mail too.

Put your mail on hold: If you’ll be away for a while, request your mail carrier to pause service to prevent accumulation.

Lock the door and secure your garage: Avoid a “Home Alone” situation. If your vehicle is parked outside, consider using a car cover for protection against the elements.
