The Ritz-Carlton Maui: A Cultural Haven
Clifford Nae’ole, the longtime cultural advisor of The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua, shared, “My kuleana, or responsibility, is to pay attention to the culture and to bring the culture alive in the present…” During our conversation at the new Anuenue Room—a breezy, exclusive lounge—he emphasized how every element in the resort is designed to tell a story.
The Anuenue Room offers guests unique experiences like daily food presentations, accompanied by breathtaking views of neighboring Moloka’i island and the lush golf course.
Nae’ole has been instrumental in the resort’s transformation, which recently underwent a $100-million renovation. This significant upgrade incorporates local art and culture throughout the property—from the redesigned lobby to the newly added Fire Lanai rooms. Each aspect deliberately reflects Hawaiian history and artistry.
“Our investment in The Ritz-Carlton Maui was centered around enhancing the guest experience through premium amenities and sustainable improvements,” says Brian Kaufman, managing director at Blackstone Real Estate Partners, the resort’s owner.
A Heritage of Respect
The renovation approach honors the land’s deep cultural roots. In 1987, workers discovered a burial ground during the resort’s construction, leading to a shift of plans that ensured the Honokahua Preservation Site is maintained. This site is vital to Hawaiian ancestry, making the resort a sacred space where guests can recognize the historical significance of the location.
Andrew Rogers, the general manager, notes, “This location could never be duplicated. The hotel resides on land that’s invaluable to the Hawaiian people.”
Unveiling Luxury and Comfort
Upon entering the updated lobby, guests are greeted with hand-carved wooden kapa panels representing the six bays. Nae’ole conveys that “everything has a purpose,” as a reflection of the storytelling tradition inherent in Hawaiian culture.
The most significant transformation is the pool area, now boasting 10,000 square feet of outdoor space comprising three infinity-edge pools that connect with waterfalls. For those seeking privacy, seven new cabanas with flat-screen TVs and lounge furniture are available for rent, all offering stunning views of the tropical landscape.
Fire Lanai Rooms: New Elevated Retreats
The Fire Lanai rooms, located on the ground floor of the Nāpili Tower, offer breathtaking views of the bay and features such as private lanai spaces with shaded trellises, hammocks, and gas fire pits. Collaborating with Philpotts Interiors, Nae’ole incorporated elements of native culture with modern sophistication.
Engaging Cultural Activities
The resort enhances its cultural offerings, allowing visitors to participate in activities like guided walking tours near the Honokahua Preservation Site, art tours, lei-making, and hula-dancing classes. Nae’ole aims to keep the Hawaiian cultural experience authentic and enriching.
Through initiatives like the Ambassadors of the Environment program in partnership with environmentalist Jean-Michel Cousteau, guests can enjoy family-friendly hikes along Maui’s coast, deepening their connection to the island’s diverse ecosystem.
Ultimately, The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua invites travelers to immerse themselves in nature and engage with the rich cultural heritage of Hawaii—truly a luxurious escape that respects and upholds the traditions of the land.
