Top 8 Camping Spots in Big Sur: Breathtaking Ocean and Forest Views

Enjoy coastal views, buffet breakfasts, and tent and RV sites among the redwoods.

If you’ve been to Big Sur, the landscape is likely etched in your mind — rugged coastline shrouded in mist and elephant seals sunning themselves on the beach. Moreover, if you’ve never been, you certainly don’t want to miss this place, especially if you have a penchant for stunning coastal drives that lead to picturesque campsites near beaches and hiking trails.

This special stretch of the California coast, between Carmel and San Simeon, runs through the northernmost section of Los Padres National Forest. As one might imagine, the camping in Big Sur is plentiful and truly spectacular.

Severe weather in early 2023 unfortunately damaged sections of Highway 1, Nacimiento-Fergusson Road, and multiple other routes, which has cut off access to some campsites while repairs are underway. Therefore, check each campground’s website for its operating status. You can also find the latest information on road closures on the official Caltrans website.

What to Know Before Planning a Camping Trip in Big Sur

In Big Sur, there are campgrounds situated in state parks and the national forest, as well as privately-owned campgrounds that cater to every style — from hike-in tent spots to yurts and cabins. However, remember that you can only spend the night at designated campgrounds, as camping along Highway 1 or Nacimiento-Fergusson Road is illegal.

Most of Big Sur’s campgrounds offer online reservation systems that allow you to secure a spot well in advance, although some provide only a few first-come, first-served campsites. Amenities and styles vary significantly from campground to campground, so it is essential to research the available facilities including bathrooms, showers, as well as electricity and water hookups.

Finally, remember to respect any wildlife you encounter, manage your campfire responsibly, and follow the principles of Leave No Trace.

Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park boasts an impressive 189 tent and RV sites at its campground alongside the Big Sur River, however, you will need to plan ahead to snag one. Each campsite features parking, a fire pit, and a picnic table, while the campground provides hot showers and toilets. Although dogs are allowed, they must always be leashed and there are no RV hookups available.

Camping reservations can be made online or by phone, but please note that they often fill up six months in advance, even in winter. Last-minute campers should be aware that sites cannot be reserved online or by phone within 48 hours of arrival, but cancellations can occasionally free up spots for walk-ups.

Treebones Resort

Treebones Resort is renowned for its glamping yurts, which come equipped with electricity, running water, cozy beds, and decks overlooking the ocean. Those looking for a more rustic overnight stay can opt for one of the bring-your-own tent sites, which include picnic tables and access to water. However, campfires and dogs are not allowed here, ensuring a peaceful camping experience. Each booking includes full access to the resort facilities — a pool, hot tub, showers, and a delicious buffet breakfast.

Camping in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park is extremely limited — only two campsites are available. However, the park is breathtakingly stunning (think granite cliffs, waterfalls, and panoramic ocean views), making it worthy of consideration.

The two campsites are quite simple, featuring just a fire ring, a picnic table, and access to pit toilets. Located right off Highway 1, you must park and carry your camping gear since cars and dogs are not permitted. To secure one of these coveted spots, it is advisable to plan far in advance as reservations usually fill up six months prior.

Kirk Creek is a bit remote, so be sure to fill up your water jugs before arriving. The campground is equipped with vault toilets, picnic tables, fire rings, and firewood available for purchase. Notably, leashed dogs are allowed here.
