How do you pack for an Alaskan cruise? That is the question. When packing for our first Alaska cruise we had to do some serious thinking. Since then, we’ve taken two other Alaskan cruises plus a cruise to Antarctica and Greenland, so we have learned a lot about packing for polar regions. When traveling to Alaska you have to be prepared for every type of weather. Like other cruises, there are formal nights and cocktail evenings, but in Alaska, days are more casual and the dinner attire is more relaxed. Alaska weather changes quickly, so you will need layers to take on and off as needed.

What To Pack For An Alaska Cruise

Packing for a cruise vacation to Alaska is fundamentally different than a Caribbean cruise. Caribbean cruises are easy to pack for. Simply throw in swimwear, beachwear flip-flops, and a few smart outfits for evenings, and you are good to go. When cruising to Alaska, you will encounter a mix of warm and cold weather, necessitating layers in your packing.

The weather in Alaska can be unpredictable, ranging from warm and sunny to cold and rainy, often within the same day. Onboard the ship, you’ll experience a mix of casual and formal events, and your adventures could extend beyond walking tours, possibly involving zodiacs or kayaks in the breathtaking fjords.

We’ve experienced three different Alaska cruises, with our latest journey through the Inside Passage of Southeast Alaska and British Columbia on the Nieuw Amsterdam ship by Holland America Cruise Line. This ship offered a perfect blend of luxury with adventure, making packing a bit more complex as you’ll want both adventure-oriented and activewear, alongside some formal and smart casual clothing. However, we’ve crafted the ultimate Alaska Cruise Packing list so you will feel comfortable and look great.

We have also sailed to Alaska with Princess Cruises and UnCruise. While Princess Cruises has similarities to Holland America Cruise Line, UnCruise provides a more expedition-focused experience on smaller ships.

Alaska Cruise Packing Tips – Layering

When packing for an Alaska cruise, it’s essential to consider layering. Southeast Alaska can experience warmth during the cruise season, yet you will be sailing Arctic waters close to glaciers and icebergs, necessitating a mix of shorts and t-shirts paired with thermal layers and water-resistant clothing.

Layered clothing: The weather in Alaska can shift rapidly, so incorporating layers will allow you to adapt. It’s wise to pack T-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, sweaters, and jackets. Waterproof pants that convert to shorts are an excellent option to stay prepared for changing conditions.

Keep in mind, if you’re cruising early or late in the season, the weather will likely be cooler, so include warm wool socks and a heavier sweater in your mid-layer collection.

On Deck

Even if the sun is shining, expect a cool breeze. On deck, you’ll want windproof and waterproof layers, along with a hat and gloves.

Comfort is key, allowing you to fully appreciate the beauty surrounding you. (Avoid being that person in shorts who retreats inside after a mere five minutes due to the cold.)

On Shore

On land, the weather can be equally unpredictable. When visiting various Alaska cruise ports, you might experience drastically different conditions and shore excursions.

Weather can shift quickly throughout the Alaska cruise season, and surprisingly wet conditions can occur in summer. For instance, Juneau might greet you with warmth while Ketchikan could be cold and rainy. In fact, Ketchikan ranks as one of the wettest places in North America. Thus, it’s vital to have an outer layer that is both windproof and waterproof, alongside a mid-layer for warmer days, while not forgetting summer clothing for those rare, beautiful sunny days.

Alaska Cruise Packing Checklist

Now that we comprehend the unpredictability of Alaska’s weather, here’s a suggested packing checklist for your Alaska cruise.

Remember to include layered clothing, waterproof outerwear, warm clothing, formal attire, casual attire, and crucially, comfortable footwear in your packing. Moreover, don’t overlook the possibility of swimming or enjoying the hot tub; make sure to pack a bathing suit!

Waterproof Jacket

Having a waterproof outer layer is crucial for fully enjoying your Alaskan cruise. Fleece Midlayer

Even during summer, the temperatures can drop, making a stylish fleece mid-layer a smart addition. I found myself wearing my mid-fleece layer frequently; hence, opting for one that can also function stylishly on its own is beneficial. Puffy Jacket

On the water, you might prefer something warmer than a fleece mid-layer. We adore our Canada Goose Hybridge puffy coat, though it is quite expensive. Dave has a Marmot puffer jacket that performs just as well. Wear it beneath your windproof and water-resistant jacket or as casual wear; either way, it exudes a classic appearance. Trekking Pants

Whether you’re embarking on a whale-watching tour, hiking to a glacier, or strolling through town, trekking pants are great for an Alaska cruise. We prefer these Abisko Lite trekking Trousers since they combine style with durability, breathability, and quick-dry performance. There are options for women here as well.

If you don’t own waterproof pants, aim for water-resistant varieties as being damp is uncomfortable. These lightweight hiking trousers dry quickly and are ideal alternatives.

Trekking Shirts

A well-designed trekking shirt can double as smart casual evening wear. This trekking shirt by Fjällräven is breathable and wicks away moisture for more adventurous excursions while also looking suitable for dinner. Purchase it here.

A flannel shirt serves as another excellent option. I rely on my flannel during polar travel, and this Övik Flannel Shirt for women is more stylish than what I previously owned. I’m ready to order it!

Hiking Boots

If glacier excursions, dog sledding, or hiking through the Tongass Forest are on your agenda, we strongly recommend wearing waterproof hiking boots. We have also retired our waterproof shoes in Alaska. These waterproof boots are our top choice. With hiking boots providing proper ankle support for uneven terrains, you can wear wool socks to keep warm while stepping onto glaciers or going dog sledding.

Waterproof Shoes

You don’t necessarily need heavy hiking boots. Waterproof shoes are sufficient for walking around town or on the ship. We’ve even worn waterproof shoes on excursions like whale watching, provided we don’t trek into muddy areas, though it can still be wet on the boat. For less strenuous activities, water-resistant shoes will suffice.

Our favorite is the Merrill brand, and the Moab 3 waterproof hiking shoe surpasses expectations as an all-around shoe that keeps your feet warm and dry.

Gadgets and Gear for Your Alaska Cruise

Binoculars

You’re likely to encounter wildlife such as eagles, whales, and bears, and binoculars can provide a closer view. Even if you have a zoom lens, binoculars enhance your wildlife spotting experience and allow you to appreciate the beauty of glaciers and icebergs. We recommend these Tasco binoculars.

Camera: Alaska is filled with stunning landscapes to capture. While we delve into camera gear further down, remember that bringing more than just your smartphone is essential. A zoom lens is necessary for wildlife and a wide-angle lens is optimal for the enormous glaciers.

Lanyard for Cruise Ship Card

When you embark on a cruise, you’ll be provided with a cruise card to use for purchases. Even with an all-inclusive package, you’ll need to swipe your card. We found that a lanyard is perfect for preventing the need to carry bags around the ship. This package includes 4 waterproof lanyards along with luggage tags.

Magnet Hooks

Cruise cabins typically lack adequate hooks, and during an Alaskan cruise, you’ll have more layers and jackets hanging around. Magnetic Hooks are practical since cruise ship walls are metal. You can attach them to a wall and hang your garments out of the way easily.

Coffee Mug

A refillable mug is a must-have on a cruise. Unless you’re ordering specialty coffee (or have a package), you’ll encounter small mugs in restaurants. With your mug, you can fill it with coffee and take it throughout the ship. This feature is invaluable for coffee or tea lovers. Hanging Organizer

Bathroom spaces can be minimal on cruise ships, making a hanging toiletry bag essential. We store everything in ours, keeping toiletries tidy and inaccessible. Electronics Packing List for Alaska Cruise

We carry a variety of electronics. However, we’ve compiled a list we believe will keep most travelers comfortable, capturing incredible moments while staying connected during the cruise in Alaska.

Belkin Mini Surge

You’ll desire multiple outlets to plug in your electronics, as charging ports in cabins can be limited. This Belkin model features two USB ports and three plugs, allowing multiple electronics to charge while occupying only one room plug.

It’s wise to store your photos nightly. I’ve seen travelers lose cameras and memories in the water on an Alaska cruise. This Samsung portable hard drive is impressively compact, easily fitting in your carry-on, yet it offers 1 terabyte of memory.

An Alaska cruise is a once-in-a-lifetime journey, necessitating more than a smartphone for capturing stunning visuals. You’ll need at least a zoom lens for wildlife and a wide-angle lens for landscapes. I personally utilize a complete Sony system and have a full gear list for my travels, but here are essential items you’ll want for an Alaska cruise.

Camera Body

We typically employ a Sony system for travel and adore it. While I use a Sony A1, it’s quite costly and not compulsory if photography isn’t your profession. For a more budget-friendly option, consider the Sony A7R IV. The resolution and dynamic range of this camera will beautifully capture Alaska’s stunning landscapes.

Lenses

Wide-angle Lens: For capturing breathtaking landscapes and expansive views from the deck of the ship, lenses like the Sony FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM or the Sony FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM prove ideal.

Telephoto Lens

Telephoto Lens: To photograph wildlife from a distance, consider the Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS. If you require even more reach, the Sony FE 100-400mm F4.5–5.6 GM OSS could be a wise choice.

GoPro Hero 11 Black

We never travel without a GoPro, and the GoPro Hero 11 Black is our latest model. GoPros excel in capturing photos and videos during water activities or adventures. If you’re dog sledding, landing on glaciers, or kayaking, a GoPro is essential. Personally, I utilize it often for even casual filming around town.

GoPro Hero 11: A waterproof camera is highly recommended. You’ll likely find yourself whale watching, gliding through fjords, or hanging out on deck in rainy conditions, which makes having a GoPro indispensable.

Final Packing Considerations

Having discussed essential packing considerations for Alaska cruises, we aim to detail what we specifically included. Dressing up is not obligatory at night unless you’re planning on visiting specialty restaurants or participating in formal nights, but we believe, “You are on a cruise, why wouldn’t you get fancy for an evening?” Therefore, we will include formal dress options alongside clothing for both men and women.

The above packing considerations are primarily for cruising southeast Alaska, the typical route for most cruise lines, which we’ve followed for all our Alaskan cruises.

It can feel nearly impossible to pack light for such an adventure. Reducing our bags to just one suitcase each was challenging.
