Explore Letchworth State Park: The Grand Canyon of the East

Overview of Letchworth State Park

Nestled in upstate New York, between the cities of Buffalo and Rochester, lies one of the most beautiful natural attractions on the East Coast: Letchworth State Park. Known as the “Grand Canyon of the East,” Letchworth boasts stunning views of deep gorges and roaring waterfalls, making it the perfect destination for nature enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers alike.

Letchworth spans 14,500 acres in western New York, featuring over 60 miles of hiking trails and waterfalls cascading as high as 100 feet. Visitors can expect to become totally enveloped by the area’s all-encompassing natural beauty, getting up close to three major waterfalls with scenic overlooks and connected trails throughout the park.

Conrad Baker, an environmental educator, mentions that Letchworth has something for everyone, offering activities and experiences for both casual visitors and those with days to spend immersed in nature. “Letchworth is significant culturally and ecologically for its diverse landscapes and the people who care for it,” he explains. “Letchworth is a haven.”

Best Hotels

For those seeking accommodations in Letchworth State Park, several options are available. The Glen Iris Inn, located within the park, is cherished for its beautiful location and historic charm. Guests can select from rooms in the main building or historic cottages scattered throughout the park. Note that various options are open seasonally, so it’s wise to plan accordingly.

“Staying at the Glen Iris Inn is one of the most iconic Letchworth experiences,” Baker remarks. “You’re walking the same hallways as William Pryor Letchworth, experiencing the history that envelops the landscapes.”

Both Maplewood Lodge and Parker’s Hideaway offer additional cozy options for stays within the park. Moreover, campers can find numerous tent and trailer campsites, along with cabins.

Outside the park, travelers can discover several local bed-and-breakfasts in small surrounding towns while major hotel chains are accessible in larger nearby cities like Buffalo and Rochester.

Things to Do

The main attraction at Letchworth State Park is, of course, the park itself. Hiking, biking, and snowshoeing are just a few available activities. The seven-mile Gorge Trail, open year-round, provides an unforgettable experience along the gorge edge, showcasing breathtaking views of the park’s three largest waterfalls: Upper Falls, Middle Falls, and Lower Falls.

“All of these waterfall overlooks are super accessible,” Baker notes, highlighting how close they are to parking. “At other parks, a day hike is required, but here, it’s just steps away.”

The park includes the Autism Nature Trail, designed for neurodiverse visitors, featuring a mile-long interactive path with various nature stations. “It’s even paved enough for manually powered wheelchairs to navigate,” Baker states.

Aside from hiking, visitors can fish, boat, and experience other activities. Baker particularly enjoys the secluded pockets of old-growth woods near Upper Falls. Activities like horseback riding, rafting, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing are available all year, complemented by guided walks, tours, and nature programs.

Birdwatchers can explore an official Important Birding Area, attempting to spot a variety of wood warblers. Memorable experiences include hot air balloon rides, free summer swimming at the north-end pool, and thrilling whitewater rafting starting as early as April.

Best Restaurants

Dining at Letchworth State Park offers two excellent options: Caroline’s Dining Room in the Glen Iris Inn and Lower Falls Restaurant. Caroline’s features seasonal openings with stunning views of Middle Falls, serving classic American breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In contrast, the Lower Falls presents a more concise menu with quick-serve items.

Baker highlights snack stands scattered throughout the park, including a popular spot by the dam with a gift shop. A unique treasure is the local produce stand at the camper store in Highbanks camping area, known for its delectable pies. Early birds should check their Facebook page for offerings.

Quick bites can be found in nearby Perry, with options for a more fulfilling meal in Buffalo or Rochester, both about an hour’s drive from the park.

In Rochester, Owl House attracts vegans and vegetarians with creative dishes utilizing locally sourced ingredients. In Buffalo, Bacchus Wine Bar & Restaurant features tapas and an impressive wine list, while Hutch’s provides American cuisine infused with global flavors.

Best Time to Visit

Fall is widely regarded as one of the best times to visit Letchworth, showcasing the vivid autumn leaves over rolling hills. However, spring also presents a fantastic opportunity, as the waterfalls rejuvenate after winter. While upstate New York winters can be challenging, some locals favor visiting during this season due to the beautiful snowmobile trails.

Summer sees most trails, accommodations, and dining options operating, although this is also peak visitor season. Thus, balance your itinerary based on access preferences and anticipated crowds.

How to Get There

Getting to Letchworth State Park is straightforward. Both Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) and Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport (ROC) are within an hour’s drive. Car rentals are available at both airports, making it easy for visitors to reach the park.

Avid bikers can explore the Genesee Greenway Trail connecting from Rochester, while bus service is accessible from Rochester to Letchworth on select weekends.

If you’re also visiting Niagara Falls, less than two hours away, this adds another exciting element to your travel plans.

How to Get Around

Within the park, driving is the most convenient way to explore. Therefore, families with young children or those needing mobility assistance can easily visit waterfalls by driving between overlooks instead of hiking. There are four main entrances on the park’s west side, with the Portageville gate offering the easiest access to the falls for short visits.

It’s important to note that using Google Maps might direct you to the park’s center. Instead, Baker suggests entering specific nearby addresses for the best access.

“It’s easy to assume you’ve seen it all at Letchworth, but visitors return for 50 years, and still miss out on various experiences,” Baker concludes.
