Discover the World’s Best Train Journey: Luxury, Gourmet Dining, and Breathtaking Rockies Views

1. Overview

Rocky Mountaineer’s Rockies to the Red Rocks route takes passengers on an epic train journey from Colorado to Utah.

2. The Appeal of Train Travel

Before cars and planes, there were trains — the quickest and most convenient way to get around, shuffling people across state lines, over rivers, and along mountainsides. Even today, train travel is widely used and sought after, both around the world and here in the U.S. According to the 2022 Transportation Statistics Annual Report by the U.S. Department of Transportation, Amtrak serviced 32 million passengers in 2019 — up one million from 2018 and almost 12 million from 2000. Not only are trains a more sustainable way of getting from point A to B, but the slow, scenic travel they’re known for has become its own kind of vacation.

3. Choosing Rocky Mountaineer

Rocky Mountaineer

There are several companies that offer rides through beautiful landscapes, but it was Rocky Mountaineer that GoTravelDaily readers voted their favorite train in this year’s World’s Best Awards — the first-ever winner of this brand-new category. As someone who has embarked on a Rocky Mountaineer journey, I understand why.

4. Experience and Routes

Rocky Mountaineer

Rocky Mountaineer has been taking passengers through incredible landscapes since 1990 when it launched its inaugural trip through western Canada and the Canadian Rockies. Its unique, dome-shaped windows (only available on the Canadian routes) and luxury tiers of service were a hit with guests, leading to the opening of three additional routes — Whistler Sea to Sky Climb and Rainforest to Gold Rush (both in Canada), plus its latest line, Rockies to the Red Rocks in the U.S.

5. The Journey Begins

The company launched a preview season for this U.S. route in August 2021, and I was invited on board in October. Admittedly, I’ve never considered myself a nature person — I’m typically more enticed by beach and city destinations. However, this trip changed the kind of traveler I am.

6. Luxurious Comfort

As soon as I stepped into the train car, I knew this wouldn’t be an ordinary ride. From plush leather seats that reclined without compromising legroom to windows that climbed to the edge of the roof, every detail felt truly luxe.

Those opting for GoldLeaf service can enjoy a bi-level car with a dining room on the first floor and full glass-dome windows on the second floor. Meanwhile, SilverLeaf cars are all on a single level, with meals and snacks served directly to your seat.

7. Scenic Views and Unique Experiences

The ride from Denver, Colorado, to Moab, Utah, stands out in my memory. We followed the sparkling Colorado River while weaving around the Rocky Mountains and traversing through valleys. Our host pointed out spots where former presidents liked to vacation. Moreover, without Wi-Fi and limited cellphone service, it became easy to immerse myself in the history and stunning landscapes.

After a restful night in Glenwood Springs (Rocky Mountaineer operates only during daylight to ensure guests can take in the sights), we continued to Moab, where the scenery transitioned from green foliage to the striking reds and beiges of Utah’s cliffs. This segment was faster, yet it provided opportunities for captivating storytelling from our guide.

8. Culinary Delights on Board

During meal times, hosts came to “set the table,” laying out a white cloth over our tray tables and providing cutlery and seasonings. Notably, the meals reflected local fare: one featured a charcuterie board showcasing bison, elk, and venison — all wildlife we had been hoping to spot while the train traversed the Colorado mountains.

“From the moment guests begin their train journey, our team ensures everything is taken care of, allowing them to simply sit back, relax, and enjoy the extraordinary experience,” shared Nicole Ford, vice president of communications, sustainability, and stakeholder relations at Rocky Mountaineer.

9. A Transformative Travel Experience

Reflecting on this Rocky Mountaineer trip, I can confidently say it was one of the most unique experiences of my life. As someone who often struggles to unplug, it provided an opportunity to connect deeply with the natural beauty and history surrounding me in a luxurious, relaxing setting.
