Summary of 5 Must-Visit Waterfalls Near Manado, North Sulawesi 2025:
Waterfalls to Visit Near Manado, North Sulawesi
If you’re looking for some extra things to do in North Sulawesi, why not go see some stunning waterfalls? There are various remarkable waterfalls near Manado, easily accessible and perfect for a day trip. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you explore these natural wonders!
1. Tumimperas Waterfall
Tumimperas is a beautiful waterfall located in the Tomohon area, approximately 20 minutes from Tomohon town, or 1 hour from Manado. Here’s a map.
The facility features three concrete paths leading to the waterfall, which are relatively short and easy, although the jungle may become overgrown during the rainy season. The descent to the waterfall takes roughly 15 minutes.
The waterfall appears taller in person than in photos, and it can swell significantly during the rainy season. When visited in mid-May, it was gradually reducing in size, yet still a spectacular sight.
This spot is a perfect addition to your itinerary, especially if you also plan to explore Bukit Kasih and other attractions in the Tomohon area.
2. Kali Waterfall
Kali is one of the more famous waterfalls in the Manado region, located about 45 minutes from the city. Here’s a map.
The journey to Kali traverses through rural villages and concludes at a cluster of modest homes, where some friendly locals serenade visitors with Gospel songs.
After a humid hike that had us sweating, my guide and I reached this impressive twin waterfall deep within a jungle ravine. Pictures don’t truly capture its grandeur! During our hike, we even spotted some rare black monkeys (Sulawesi macaques) swinging in the trees.
The trek to the falls from the parking area is steep and challenging, though not hazardous, taking about 20 to 30 minutes.
3. Desa Tincep Waterfall
This picturesque roadside waterfall is situated in the Tomohon area, around 30 minutes from Tomohon town or 1 hour from Manado. Here’s a map for reference.
You can easily observe this waterfall from the road, or take a brief 2-minute walk down for a closer view.
Unfortunately, with the new tourism developments around the waterfall, including swings, restaurants, and photo platforms, the natural environment has changed, though the waterfall’s allure remains intact.
4. Kanderawatu Waterfall
This waterfall is hidden within the jungle, approximately 15 minutes from Tomohon or 30 minutes from Manado. Here’s a map.
The hike to this waterfall typically takes around 15 minutes, as it’s only 500 meters from the main road.
The pathway is paved with handrails, but during my visit in May, it was quite overgrown with lush vegetation. In some sections, the foliage was dense enough to warrant a machete!
As you stroll along, you’ll hear the thunderous sound of the waterfall, leading to a small viewing platform positioned above the cascade.
5. Tunan Waterfall
This waterfall is also about 45 minutes from Manado. Here’s a map.
You can conveniently combine a visit to this waterfall with a trip to Tangkoko National Park since they are relatively close to each other.
When I arranged for a driver to take me back to Manado from Tangkoko, I offered an additional 50k Rupiah (~$3 USD) to stop here on the way; he was more than happy to accommodate!
The scenic drive to the waterfall is equally rewarding!
The hike to the waterfall is level and relatively easy, taking only about 10 to 15 minutes. The falls are stunning, with a refreshing pool ideal for a swim at the base.
I’ve heard that the waterfall is 85 meters tall, although its actual height may vary; it certainly appears larger than it does in photographs.
There’s a challenging path leading to the top of the waterfall, but since it was getting dark, I chose to enjoy the views from the bottom this visit.
A small entrance fee might be applicable; kids from the local community often help collect payment for the hike, though they may not always be present.
Entrance Fees
Most of these breathtaking waterfalls are free to explore, although a couple might charge a minor parking fee.
Our Manado Driver
For this trip, we relied on the experience of driver Roy Paoki from Manado.
He is an exceptionally knowledgeable tour guide, offering his services for around 700k Rupiah ($50 USD) for a full day trip (12 hours) in the Manado area.
Having traveled with Roy multiple times over the years, I can confidently say he is an outstanding guide—truly my favorite during my explorations in Indonesia!
You can reach him via WhatsApp at ☎ +62 823-9351-6786 or visit his Facebook page.
Where We Stayed
During our stay, we opted for Istanaku Guesthouse 2 in Manado city, paying $20 USD for a double room equipped with cold A/C and a hot shower.
I have booked this accommodation several times throughout the years and have consistently had a wonderful experience. The staff is exceptionally friendly, the rooms are tidy, and the location is very convenient.
It’s just a 5-minute walk from a KFC restaurant and a short drive to the Manado waterfront, which is ideal if you plan on visiting Bunaken Marine Park for snorkeling adventures.
Keep in mind that prices may fluctuate, so always be on the lookout for great deals.
