A small town 40 miles south of Austin, New Braunfels is known primarily for the popular Schlitterbahn Waterpark, but that’s just the beginning of the fun available in the area.
1. Natural Bridge Caverns
Located about 15 minutes west of New Braunfels, Natural Bridge Caverns is one of Texas’ true natural wonders. 3. Chuck’s Tubes
Situated on the less-crowded Comal River, Chuck’s Tubes offers a leisurely tubing experience through one of the river’s most fascinating and winding sections. They also rent mini-kegs and insulated backpacks for beverages, enhancing your day on the river. After tubing, guests can enjoy some top-notch barbecue available right in the parking lot. Although many tubing businesses face issues with rowdy or inconsiderate patrons, Chuck’s Tubes consistently receives high praise due to their attentive staff, committed to ensuring that everyone has a safe and enjoyable time.
4. Gruene Hall
Established in 1878, Gruene Hall is recognized as Texas’ oldest dance hall. The rustic structure contains a large main room with a stage at one end and a bar at the other, accentuated by a wooden dance floor in between. This venue hosts an impressive lineup of musical acts, featuring notable performers like Willie Nelson and Chubby Checker. While tickets are necessary for weekend shows, many weekday performances are free. 5. Gristmill
Overlooking the Guadalupe River, Gristmill is a sprawling restaurant built from the remnants of a historic mill. This multi-level dining venue offers stunning views of the river from both indoor and outdoor seating. The menu highlights items such as burgers and steaks, alongside enticing options like chicken-fried steak, catfish, and mouth-watering pies.
