Camping in Napa Valley may not be the first option that comes to mind when considering a visit to wine country. However, it can provide an economical accommodation choice. Surprisingly, you will find several conveniently located campgrounds near the most popular towns in Napa Valley.
- Napa Valley Expo RV Park Camping: Located just 10 blocks from downtown Napa, this RV park offers water, sewer, electrical hookups, and complimentary WiFi.
- Calistoga RV Park and Campground: Situated at the north end of Napa Valley, just a few blocks from downtown Calistoga, this campground features sites with water and 30 or 50 amp electricity, along with some sewer hookups. They also have a tent camping area that is pet-friendly. Amenities include free WiFi and showers, and they are open year-round.
- Skyline Wilderness Park: Surprisingly close to Napa, some spaces here offer hookups while others are designated for tent camping only. The facilities include restrooms and showers, along with some horse camping sites nearby. Pets are allowed, but dogs must remain off the hiking trails in the park.
- Bothe-Napa Valley State Park: This campground is located on California Highway 29, north of St. Helena, in the heart of Napa Valley. It accommodates campers up to 31 feet long and trailers up to 24 feet long. Amenities include pay showers and yurts for rent. A swimming pool is available during the warmer months. It is advisable to plan ahead to secure a campsite at this or any other state park.
Places to Camp Within 50 Miles
While camping options in Napa Valley itself are limited, there are several places to stay within an hour’s drive that provide excellent alternatives.
- The closest RV park to Napa is in Vallejo, just 15 miles south of downtown. Tradewinds RV Park features sites of various sizes, including accommodations for vehicles up to 45 feet long with full hookups and 30 to 50 amp service. They also offer WiFi, cable TV hookups, laundry facilities, restrooms, and showers.
- The nearest KOA is located in Petaluma, about 45 miles west of Napa.
- Vineyard RV in Vacaville is approximately 30 minutes south of downtown Napa. This park also offers cabins for rent, which are often more affordable than luxury accommodations in Napa. Additionally, Midway RV Park in Vacaville provides full hookup sites, satellite TV, and a swimming pool. Many of their sites are pull-through accessible for larger RVs.
- In several areas, Walmart allows overnight parking; however, the stores near Napa are not among those that participate in this program.
Camping at Lake Berryessa
Lake Berryessa, located east of Napa Valley, may appear close on a map. Nevertheless, the mountain range forming Napa Valley’s eastern boundary often transforms a 30-mile drive into an hour-long journey.
Most campgrounds at Lake Berryessa are positioned on the west or southwest side of the lake. If your goal is to savor the beauty of the lake, all camping spots are suitable; however, it is wise to consult a map and account for driving times before selecting a camping location when exploring Napa Valley.
Pleasure Cove Marina offers approximately two dozen RV sites, featuring full or partial hookups, alongside more than 100 tent campsites with water access only. This location is ideal for those intending to camp while enjoying the attractions of Napa Valley.
