This article reviews various bus travel options to help you choose the best service for your journey.
Buses Are an Excellent Option for Student Travelers
If you’re looking for a cheap method of transportation to make your way across the United States, you can’t go wrong with a bus. While they might be slow and have a mixed reputation, they excel in providing savings for budget-conscious travelers.
Greyhound buses have long been a staple of U.S. travel, but nowadays, numerous alternatives are available for your journey. Furthermore, many bus companies have upgraded their services significantly in recent years. It’s now common to enjoy free snacks, bottled water, and Wi-Fi connectivity, along with power outlets next to your seat.
In this article, I examine the various options you have for bus travel in the country, weighing the pros and cons of each company to help you determine which service best fits your trip.
BoltBus
I have traveled with BoltBus many times in the United States and have consistently enjoyed my experience. They are incredibly affordable, especially if you plan and purchase your tickets well in advance (often, a $1 fare is available). BoltBus offers a more comfortable experience than Greyhound buses, featuring spacious seating, ample legroom, power sockets for device charging, and free Wi-Fi access.
Chinatown Buses
Chinatown buses have been operating for over two decades and provide routes on the East Coast and Southern California to San Francisco, with additional stops in Las Vegas. They are an economical option, especially when traveling on a tight budget. Although Chinatown buses have faced safety issues in the past, they have improved their standards recently, making them a viable way to travel.
Greyhound Buses
Greyhound remains a dominant choice in U.S. travel, offering a larger number of routes and greater flexibility than other budget bus services. You may also enjoy discounts, particularly for students, to help lower your travel costs. Greyhound buses tend not to feature the frills of BoltBus or MegaBus but are a reliable option for reaching your destination, particularly along obscure routes or across central America.
Lux Bus America
If you enjoy overland travel, are in Southern California, and are willing to pay for added comfort, Lux Bus America is an ideal choice. Their Los Angeles to Las Vegas route offers luxurious seating, complimentary snacks and beverages, pillows, blankets, and entertainment options. Although it is the priciest option listed, it remains cheaper than flying.
Megabus
Megabus shares similarities with BoltBus. If you seize the opportunity to book early, $1 tickets are often available. However, if you wait until the last moment, you might need to pay around $30 for the same journey. While both services offer comparable comfort levels, my experience suggests that BoltBus offers slightly cleaner and more comfortable buses.
RedCoach
If you’re traveling along the southern east coast, RedCoach provides routes covering major cities and attractions in Florida. It’s worth checking their competitive prices, as RedCoach offers a slightly more luxurious experience compared to BoltBus, MegaBus, and Greyhound.
