The trains operate in both directions, offering two distinct experiences, but it’s recommended to follow the storyline and make the London-to-Scotland trip for your first Hogwarts Express ride.

At Universal Studios Florida, guests arrive at King’s Cross Station, a faithful recreation of its London counterpart. An old-fashioned ticker board updates the arrivals and departures at this bustling station, which doesn’t mention the secretive Hogwarts Express known only to wizards (and muggles in the know). Visitors navigate a maze of line switchbacks in a vast waiting area, culminating in a trip up to the platform.

The magical experience of running through the brick wall between Platforms 9 and 10 to access Platform 9¾ is executed using the Pepper’s Ghost effect. While in line, guests see the people ahead of them seemingly vanish through the wall. However, as they prepare to board, it feels like stepping into a dark corridor, accompanied by an audible “whoosh.” Unfortunately, there are no attempts to recreate the spellbinding experience of passing through the wall.

Clever Design and Features

Entering Platform 9¾ is an exhilarating moment within the Wizarding World. The station, with its casually scattered luggage and conductors in crisp uniforms, effectively captures the essence of the films, thanks to the involvement of key members from the Warner Bros. creative team who helped design the parks.

When the Hogwarts Express huffs into the station, its meticulously aged and realistic appearance contributes to the atmosphere. Interestingly, due to the lack of a turntable, the engine enters Platform 9¾ facing backward, which is a momentary oddity. However, as it departs for Hogsmeade, the enchantment of the experience is restored.

Travelers are seated in eight-passenger compartments that mirror the one where Harry first meets Ron and Hermione. Once settled, the conductors close the doors, and with a hearty whistle, the train departs.

The compartment’s window is actually a high-definition video monitor that synchronizes visuals to replicate the view outside as the train journeys from the bustling city of London to the Scottish village of Hogsmeade. This design creates an illusion that enhances immersion.

While the ride isn’t in 3-D, the visuals are sharp and realistic. The monitor is strategically placed to create a sense of depth as the train rocks slightly, though the footage maintains a consistent perspective.

Characters from the films appear throughout the ride, and attentive guests will spot familiar story elements along the way. Additionally, the compartment doors act as video screens, showcasing silhouettes of characters while the train’s lights flicker in sync with the action, immersing participants in the narrative.

The entire experience is a testament to Universal’s creativity. As Robbie Coltrane, who played Hagrid, stated, “The entire train ride is only about four minutes long, but you feel like you’ve been on a real journey.”
