Wheaton Regional Park, one of Montgomery County’s largest parks, offers a variety of recreational and educational opportunities. Visitors can enjoy touring Brookside Gardens, attending nature programs at Brookside Nature Center, exploring scenic trails, taking a ride on a train, horseback riding, picnicking, fishing, ice skating, playing sports, or relaxing in the shade. The park is accessible through three separate entrances: Shorefield Area, Glenallan Area, and Orebaugh Area.
Shorefield Area
- Adventure Playground – This area features numerous play structures including climbing equipment, swings, giant slides, and a sand castle. Picnic tables, cooking grills, and shelters accommodating up to 40 people are available (by permit only).
- Miniature Train and Historic Carousel – Children particularly enjoy the delightful carousel and the scenic train ride through the park, which operates on weekends in April and September, and daily from May through August.
- Pine Lake – This 5-acre lake is stocked with various fish species, and fishing is permitted with a valid permit.
- Trails – Wheaton Regional Park boasts 11 miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails, featuring both paved and natural surfaces.
Glenallan Area
- Brookside Gardens – The 50-acre award-winning garden features various horticultural displays including aquatic, azalea, butterfly, rose, children’s, formal, fragrance, Japanese style, and trial gardens. Educational programs are available for all ages, with seasonal highlights such as the Wings of Fancy live butterfly exhibit.
- Brookside Nature Center – This hands-on discovery center showcases live reptiles, amphibians, fish, insects, mammals, and an observation beehive. Visitors can explore self-guided nature trails that offer interpretive boardwalks and various wildlife viewing areas.
- Wheaton Park Stables – Here, riding lessons are offered in both an indoor arena and an outdoor facility. Guided trail rides, summer camps for children, and boarding services are also available.
Orebaugh Area
- Wheaton Sports Pavilion – This covered sports field features state-of-the-art synthetic turf, with lines for soccer, lacrosse, and futsal. It includes new lighting, sound systems, WiFi, team rooms, and facilities available for rent year-round.
- F. Frank Rubini Athletic Complex – This outdoor sports complex consists of multiple fields for softball and baseball, as well as basketball and handball courts.
- Wheaton Indoor Tennis Facility – This facility offers six heated and air-conditioned tennis courts, requiring reservations. The facility also provides lessons, clinics, party rentals, and a pro shop.
- Wheaton Ice Arena – This indoor rink operates year-round, offering various programs for recreational, freestyle, hockey, and speed skaters, with an outdoor rink available for leased time during winter months.
- Dog Park – A fenced area is provided for dog owners to exercise their pets, while dogs must remain leashed in other park sections.
