History of Gillette Castle
William Gillette, an iconic actor born in Hartford in 1853, hailed from the city’s founder, Thomas Hooker, who rests in Hartford’s Ancient Burying Ground. Best known for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes, Gillette discovered the stunning location for his castle during a 1912 boat trip along the Connecticut River. Gillette Castle, completed in 1919 at a cost of approximately $1 million, boasts unique features including hidden mirrors, a lock-protected bar, and hand-carved door latches—each of the 47 doors is one of a kind.
Upon his passing in 1937, Gillette’s will stipulated that his medieval castle would not fall into the hands of “some blithering saphead.” In 1943, the state of Connecticut acquired the nearly 200-acre estate, making it accessible to the public. A substantial restoration project costing $11.5 million was completed in 2002.
