Summary
Overview of Stinson Beach
Stinson Beach is one of northern California’s most popular beaches, conveniently located just off CA Hwy 1 about 20 miles north of San Francisco in the town of Stinson Beach. This wide, clean stretch of sand spans almost 3 miles, offering visitors a plethora of activities. However, as one of the area’s busiest beaches, parking spots fill up quickly on warm weekends.
Activities at Stinson Beach
At Stinson Beach, you can enjoy surfing or swimming, with a lifeguard on duty from late May to mid-September. Moreover, be mindful of posted signs warning about rip tides and strong currents. Thus, exercise caution when swimming and, whenever possible, do not swim alone. Be aware of the potential for great white shark attacks in the area.
Beach volleyball is also a popular activity, along with fishing permitted under California Fish and Game Guidelines. For those looking to rent equipment, Stinson Beach Surf and Kayak is conveniently located nearby on Hwy 1, offering boards, wetsuits, kayaks, and bicycles.
You’ll find several picnic tables available, including large ones suitable for groups. Although fires or grills are prohibited on the beach, barbecue grills are available in the picnic area. Nevertheless, keep in mind that dense trees và shrubs separate the picnic and parking areas from the beach.
Additionally, there are dining options nearby. The Parkside Snack Bar is located just across from the parking lot, and a summer snack bar at the base of the main lifeguard tower is also available. If you’re inclined, a short walk into town offers further dining choices.

Getting to Stinson Beach
To reach Stinson Beach from San Francisco, follow these directions: Start by going north on US Hwy 101 across the Golden Gate Bridge. From there, you can:
- Take CA Hwy 1 directly all the way, exiting US 101 onto Hwy 1 just a few miles north of the bridge. Note that while it is a scenic drive, it traverses winding roads. The section of Hwy 1 south of Stinson Beach features sharp curves and drop-offs, with some areas lacking guard rails. Vehicles exceeding 35 feet in length should avoid this route.
- Alternatively, take the same exit but turn right from Hwy 1 onto Panoramic Highway, which provides an inland route to bypass the most hazardous sections of Hwy 1.
Public Transportation Options
The Stinson Beach entrance is located between CA Hwy 1 mile markers 12.5 and 13.0, on the northern edge of town. Therefore, it helps to keep an eye on mileage markers along your route. To avoid heavy traffic, which can become quite congested on Highway One during peak times, consider taking the West Marin Stagecoach bus from Marin City. This option stops right at the beach parking lot, adding convenience to your visit.
