A Place to Walk, Dine, and Relax Along the Water in Tacoma
Fact checked by Erin Medlicott
The Tacoma Waterfront is a beautiful paved sidewalk along the Puget Sound’s Commencement Bay, perfect for walkers, joggers, or those looking to enjoy a meal at one of the waterfront restaurants. In the past, the Waterfront featured a two-mile stretch along Ruston Way; however, the path now extends all the way to Point Ruston at the northern tip of Tacoma, offering over three miles of scenic stroll.
This expansion means there are more opportunities to appreciate some of the most stunning vistas Tacoma has to offer, and exciting activities along the Waterfront are continuously increasing with the addition of Point Ruston.

Kick Back at a Park
There are several parks located along Ruston Way, providing small patches of grass perfect for picnicking or simply soaking in the view. The parks include Jack Hyde Park, Hamilton Park (possibly the smallest park in Tacoma), Dickman Mill Park, Marine Park, and Cummings Park. Additionally, Chinese Reconciliation Park, located at the southern end, offers a tranquil setting to relax while educating visitors about Tacoma’s rich history through various plaques. This park is also popular among photographers.
The Les Davis Fishing Pier is another appealing stop, whether fishing is your goal or not. While strolling the pier, keep an eye out for starfish. At the end of the pier, visitors can enjoy stunning views of Mount Rainier, downtown Tacoma, and the Port of Tacoma.
Go Parasailing
For those seeking a unique experience, Tacoma’s only parasailing service, Pacific Parasail, is located on the Tacoma Waterfront just behind The Ram. Whether you choose to go solo or in pairs, you will soar several hundred feet above the ground, enjoying breathtaking views of the water, nearby islands, the Port of Tacoma, and majestic Mt. Rainier in the distance. The calm heights also provide a wonderful opportunity to spot various marine birds and seals.
Explore Point Ruston
Point Ruston is a vibrant development at the northern end of the Waterfront featuring condos, apartments, retail spaces, and a theater along with a scenic waterway. This area enhances the retail experience at this end of the Waterfront, and it has the only major theater within Tacoma’s city limits. Visitors can enjoy numerous restaurants and cafes, but the standout feature is undoubtedly the spectacular views of the water and Mount Rainier. Bike rentals and other non-motorized vehicles are available from Wheel Fun Rentals for an enjoyable way to explore.
Ride Bikes, Surreys and Other Wheeled Fun
For an alternative way to enjoy the Waterfront while staying off your feet, consider renting from Wheel Fun Rentals, conveniently located near Point Ruston. They offer various options including bikes, surreys (ideal for families), and oversized tricycles. This can be a delightful experience for families, and even without children, riding through the scenery is a fun change of pace. However, be aware that the Waterfront can become busy during pleasant weekends; thus, it is recommended to visit during off-peak hours for a smoother ride.
Learn about Tacoma’s History
The Tacoma Waterfront is a significant part of Tacoma’s history, dating back to its early industrial days. The Ruston Way area, originally called Front Street, was once lined with industry—boatyards, warehouses, and mills. Today, remnants of this prosperous era can still be seen—circular bases from grain mills, wooden pylons rising from the waters, and bricks washed ashore among the rocks. In the 1920s, industry shifted toward Tacoma’s Tide Flats, which remains a hub of industrial activity now. Many of these historical remnants create fascinating photographic opportunities.
Take a Staycation or Vacation
Along the Waterfront, the only available hotel, Silver Cloud Inn, provides picturesque views of the water. However, prices may increase significantly during major events or weekends when visitors flock to Tacoma. A stay at Tacoma’s exclusive waterfront hotel can be an exceptional staycation or, for out-of-town guests, a prime lodging choice in the area.
