Ultimate Guide to Plaza de España in Seville

With its grandiose architecture and myriad pops of bright color, Seville’s Plaza de España is a dream destination, known for breathtaking photo opportunities. Every guidebook lists it as a must-see in the Andalusian capital—and for good reason. However, it is much more than just a stunning cultural icon. Here’s what you need to know before visiting the most emblematic square in Seville to fully appreciate its beauty and wonder.

History

The semicircular plaza nestled among the lush greenery of Maria Luisa Park seems timeless with its mix of Renaissance and Moorish-inspired architectural styles. Surprisingly, Seville’s most recognizable square is comparatively new—less than 100 years old!

Designed by local architect Aníbal González for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition, the Plaza aimed to unite Spain with its former Latin American colonies through cultural exchange.

Plaza de España was the crown jewel of this exhibition, showcasing the grandeur and beauty of both Seville and Spain.

Today, the lavish square retains its irresistible charm, making it a favorite destination for both locals and visitors. Its striking landscape has even caught Hollywood’s attention, appearing in films like “Lawrence of Arabia” and “Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones.”

Take a Boat Ride

The miniature canal flowing through Plaza de España provides a chance to relax under the warm Seville sun while enjoying remarkable views of the plaza. Boat rentals are available for 6 euros for a 35-minute ride along the 515-meter canal. You’ll glide beneath four emblematic bridges, each representing one of Spain’s ancient kingdoms: Castile, León, Aragon, and Navarre.

Visit Every Province in Spain

As its name—”Spain Square”—implies, Plaza de España showcases representation from throughout the country. Surrounding the interior of the plaza, you’ll find 48 colorful alcoves with benches, each representing a province of Spain. Each mini-pavilion features historical depictions from that region, along with a map indicating its location within the country.

Spanish visitors often seek out their home province alcove to snap a photo. If a particular Spanish destination captured your heart prior to reaching Seville, locate its alcove in Plaza de España and capture your own memorable picture.

Getting There

Plaza de España is conveniently located in the center of Maria Luisa Park, one of Seville’s beautiful green spaces, ideal for a leisurely stroll. The park is less than a 20-minute walk from the cathedral and the vibrant Santa Cruz neighborhood.

Should you prefer public transport, take bus line C4 and disembark at the Prado de San Sebastian stop. From there, the park and plaza are just around the corner. Alternatively, the tram from Plaza Nueva (which has only one line) can take you to Prado de San Sebastian or the San Bernardo train station, allowing for a simple walk to the plaza.

Things to Do Nearby

In addition to strolling through picturesque Maria Luisa Park, many other attractions are just a stone’s throw away from Plaza de España. Explore the Royal Tobacco Factory, a neoclassical structure with a rich history (the opera “Carmen” is set here).

Adjacent to the plaza is the luxurious Hotel Alfonso XIII, which is also worth checking out. Even if you aren’t a guest, be sure to walk through the lobby and admire the exquisite architecture and interior design of this historical hotel.

About a 10-minute walk away lies another of Seville’s most iconic sights: the Royal Alcazar. This historic palace-fortress gained fame when featured in a recent season of “Game of Thrones,” but its majestic architecture and rich history make it a must-visit destination. Remember to secure your ticket in advance to avoid long lines on the day of your visit.
