Airport Overview

The airport was known as Honolulu International Airport for almost 70 years before being renamed after Hawaii U.S. Senator and Medal of Honor recipient Daniel K. Inouye in 2017. However, travelers can still refer to it by its former name, especially since it remains the only major commercial airport on the island (the acronym remains “HNL” as well). The airport itself is unique, featuring open-air walkways between terminals and beautifully landscaped areas filled with native tropical plants and flowers for travelers to enjoy. As the primary gateway to the Hawaiian islands, more than 20 million visitors pass through this airport each year. Importantly, it is the only international airport in the state, welcoming visitors from outside the United States. This influx includes those who are connecting to other islands, so travelers should not expect a direct flight from Japan to Maui. Spanning 4,520 acres, the airport encompasses three terminals and four active runways, one of which was the first major offshore runway built in the world.

Daniel K. Inouye International Airport Code, Location, and Flight Information

Know Before You Go

In Terminal 1, you’ll find the hub for Hawaiian Airlines inter-island and mainland flights. Terminal 2 is home to all other airlines and international flights. Moreover, the smaller Terminal 3 is limited to the ground floor and currently only houses inter-island commuter Mokulele Airlines. Passengers arrive on the second level for Terminals 1 and 2, and on the ground floor for Terminal 3. After deplaning, you will see signs directing you toward baggage claim and ground transportation. All terminals have baggage claims located on the ground floor, with stairs, elevators, and escalators making it easy to access.

Regardless of where you are traveling from (including other parts of the United States), flight attendants will distribute an agricultural declaration form for you to complete before landing. Since Hawaii’s ecosystem is unique compared to the rest of the U.S., the state is free of most agricultural diseases and pests (such as rabies and snakes). Therefore, any plants, animals, or agricultural materials must be declared. This means bringing your pets to Hawaii requires a mandatory quarantine before they are released.

Daniel K. Inouye Airport offers complimentary Wiki Wiki Shuttle transportation between terminals from 4 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. daily, with pickups occurring every 15-20 minutes at gates C-G in Terminal 2.

Daniel K. Inouye International Airport Parking

All parking garages at the airport operate 24/7 and have a 30-day parking limit. Furthermore, HNL visitors have three parking garage options. It is essential to choose the appropriate one to avoid walking long distances or getting lost on your way to the terminal. Parking rates can be found here.

  • The International Parking Garage is situated across from the International Arrivals Building and can be accessed from the ground level of the Airport Access Road or via a vehicle bridge from the top floor of Terminal 1. After parking, travelers can walk to International Arrivals or Terminal 2 from the garage’s ground level.
  • The Terminal 2 Parking Garage is located directly across from Terminal 2. Entrance is available from the second level of the Airport Access Road near lobby 5, with multiple walkways leading to Terminal 2 from the fourth level.
  • The Terminal 1 Parking Garage is also across from Terminal 1 and can be accessed from both the ground and second levels of the Airport Access Road.

Driving Directions

There are airport off-ramps from the H-1 freeway that are accessible both eastbound and westbound. If using Nimitz Highway, turn right at Rodgers Blvd. for eastbound access and left for westbound. All exits out of the airport, including parking garages, have direct access to the H-1 Freeway eastbound and Nimitz Highway westbound. Notably, traffic on Oahu is notoriously congested, so it is wise to allocate extra time, particularly during rush hours.

Public Transportation and Taxis

The public city bus, TheBus, provides access to the airport via routes 19, 20, and 31. Bus stops are located on the roadway center median on the second level. Additionally, Roberts Express Shuttle operates ticket counters and pickup locations outside of Terminals 1 and 2. For those utilizing ridesharing apps, designated pickup spots can be found on the second floor, with one outside Terminal 1 Lobby 2 and another outside Terminal 2 Lobby 8. Furthermore, taxi services are available from the center median outside each terminal’s baggage claim areas, with designated “taxi dispatchers” present to assist passengers.

Where to Eat and Drink

If you are near Terminal 2 by the C gates, you can enjoy a sit-down meal at Gordon Biersch or grab and go at A Shack 4 Eva. Also located in the central part of Terminal 2 are fast-food chains like Burger King and Chow Mein Express. Terminal 2 by the G gates features a local microbrewery called Island Brews for those wishing to savor a final Hawaiian beer before flying. Outside of the F gates is Jose Cuervo Tequileria, offering Mexican cuisine and margaritas. For another quick option, check out an E Komo Mai snack shack by the B gates in Terminal 1. If you are in the mood for something sweet, Cold Stone Creamery and Honolulu Cookie Company are available in Terminal 2 by the E gates.

Where to Shop

Travelers will find duty-free shops in the main section of Terminal 2, with additional options located near the C gates. There are six Best Buy Express kiosks throughout the airport that are open 24 hours, should you need to purchase forgotten items such as headphones. For those wishing to bring packaged Hawaiian food back home, a visit to Hawaii Market in Terminal 2 by the E gates is highly recommended.

Wifi and Charging Stations

Complimentary Wi-Fi is available in both Terminals 1 and 2, with an option to purchase faster speeds through Boingo. Additionally, computer work/charging stations are conveniently located across from Gates F2 and E3 in Terminal 2, as well as near B5, A15, and A19 in Terminal 1.
