Overview of Kylemore Abbey
Background
Kylemore Abbey, located in Connemara, Co. Galway, boasts a rich history transforming from a humble country lodge to a luxurious estate and eventually becoming an enchanting Benedictine abbey. Originally built by Mitchell Henry, a wealthy doctor from Manchester, the estate was constructed after he inherited his father’s cotton fortune.
This beautiful castle was established in the 1860s after Mitchell fell in love with the area while visiting with his wife, Margaret, during the Irish potato famine. Construction began in 1868, ultimately resulting in a stunning 33-bedroom castle, complete with a ballroom and library, all nestled within 13,000 acres of picturesque land.
Tragically, Margaret died unexpectedly while on vacation in Egypt in 1874, shortly after the castle’s completion. To honor her memory, Mitchell built the neo-Gothic church, where both now rest. In 1902, the castle was sold to the ninth Duke of Manchester and his American wife, who redecorated it. Consequently, in 1920, Belgian Benedictine nuns established an abbey there, eventually founding a school for girls, which continued operating until 2010. Today, various parts of Kylemore Abbey are accessible to the public.

- The Walled Garden: This Victorian garden spans six acres and was tended by a staff of 40 gardeners during the Henry family’s time. Restored by the nuns, it includes a formal flower garden, vegetable garden, and the head gardener’s residence.
- The Gothic Church: This striking church mimics 14th-century architecture and was constructed as a monument to Margaret Henry. Visitors can find their mausoleum nearby.

Kylemore Abbey is situated near the town of Clifden and Letterfrack Village, with options for bus transportation from Galway, but visiting requires a short drive of about 20 minutes from Clifden.
