Talpa and Mascota Are Hidden Gems in the Mountains of Puerto Vallarta

During a recent visit to Puerto Vallarta, I took an enriching tour to explore Talpa and Mascota—two local magical towns. The journey involves a van ride along a winding mountain road, with a delightful stop at a roadside bakery that offers Mexican coffee, chayote, delicious sweets, and, of course, restroom facilities. Mascota

Your first destination, Mascota, is a colonial town that flourished during the mining boom. Once filled with shops, haciendas, bakeries, and restaurants, the town now features a notable local dairy project initiated by a high school student. This initiative focuses on providing sustainable livelihoods by selling milk and crafting cheese, and today, their cheese is recognized throughout the region.

The group proceeds to admire the remains of La Iglesia de la Preciosa Sangre, a large cathedral that fell into disrepair during the Mexican Revolution and was never completed. Visitors can also explore the vibrant main square and visit the Museum of Archaeology, which is situated in the former high school building.

As you depart from Mascota, you may encounter a steady stream of people walking along the winding road down to Talpa de Allende. This pilgrimage town attracts millions annually who come to pay homage to its patron saint renowned for her healing powers. The months from January to Easter see an influx of visitors. On our recent visit, we were fortunate to witness a procession concluding its pilgrimage, parading into the stunning cathedral accompanied by a local band while receiving blessings from the priest.

Talpa also serves as a delightful destination for local shopping. While traversing its charming cobblestone streets, guides will lead you to delectable candy factories that populate the side streets. You will have ample time to discover this magical town and procure some locally crafted handicrafts.

Following your exploration of Talpa, guests return to Mascota, making a stop at the Villa Cantabria to enjoy breathtaking views of Talpa and the majestic, extinct volcanoes towering over the lush valley. Once in Mascota, everyone can indulge in a delicious lunch prepared with organic ingredients sourced from the local Talpa and Mascota region.
