Essential Passport Information for Canadians Traveling to Mexico

Nearly two million Canadians visit Mexico each year for leisure and business, making it the second most popular tourist destination for Canadians, as reported by the Government of Canada. Before 2010, Canadians could enter Mexico using basic identification, such as a driver’s license accompanied by a birth certificate. However, regulations changed when the United States implemented the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, leading to stricter travel document requirements for Canadians traveling in North America. Consequently, a valid passport is now essential for entry into Mexico.

Canadian citizens without a valid passport will be denied entry into Mexico and returned to Canada. While some countries mandate that your passport be valid for several months post-entry, Mexico does not impose this requirement. Nonetheless, your passport must be valid upon entry and during your entire duration of stay in Mexico.

Requirements for Canadian Residents

If you hold permanent residency in Canada but are not a Canadian citizen, you should present your Resident Card along with either a Certificate of Identity or a Refugee Travel Document. It is also advisable to carry your original passport from your country of citizenship. Airlines might deny boarding to travelers lacking proper identification, thus, it is critical to have the correct documents. For further clarification regarding travel documents and entry requirements, reach out to the Mexican embassy or consulate closest to your location.

The passport requirement for Canadians traveling to Mexico was enforced on March 1, 2010. Since then, all Canadian citizens must possess a valid passport to gain entry into Mexico. A passport serves as the best form of international identification, helping to reduce potential travel-related issues.

If You Lose Your Passport in Mexico

If your Canadian passport is misplaced or stolen while in Mexico, immediately contact the Embassy of Canada or the nearest consulate to obtain an emergency replacement travel document. The Embassy is situated in the Polanco district of Mexico City, with additional consulates available in cities like Acapulco, Cabo San Lucas, Cancún, Guadalajara, Mazatlán, Monterrey, Oaxaca, Playa Del Carmen, Puerto Vallarta, and Tijuana. Depending on your specific situation, Canadian consular officials may issue a temporary passport, allowing you to continue your journey, though this travel document must be replaced upon your return to Canada.

Emergency Assistance

If you find yourself faced with an emergency while in Mexico, be advised that the emergency contact number is 066, not 911. Additionally, you can obtain bilingual support by dialing 076 for the Ángeles Verdes, who provide roadside assistance for those driving in Mexico as well as general tourist assistance.

It is prudent to keep the emergency contact number for the Canadian Embassy handy: (55) 5724-7900 for the Mexico City area. If you are outside Mexico City, the consular section can be reached via 01-800-706-2900. This toll-free line is available across Mexico, 24/7.
