The impressive Palladian mansion, which is steeped in history, was home to noble families for centuries before it suffered destruction by fire and underwent reconstruction in the 20th century.

Background
Traditionally, Powerscourt Estate has been home to the Viscounts of Powerscourt—a noble title established in 1618. However, long before the Viscounts took residence, a medieval castle graced the picturesque landscape in the 13th century.
The estate underwent a transformation in the 18th century, evolving into a stunning Palladian mansion surrounded by exquisite gardens featuring formal Japanese gardens and statue-filled Italian gardens.
In a pivotal moment for the estate, the 11th Viscount of Powerscourt sold the property in 1961 to the Slazenger family, known for their distinguished sporting goods business. Tragically, a fire in 1974 ravaged the magnificent mansion.
Today, the Slazenger family continues to own Powerscourt Estate, having restored the buildings and maintained the grounds. While only two rooms of the mansion are presently accessible to the public, the main edifice has been transformed into charming storefronts.

Powerscourt Estate is renowned for hosting one of the world’s most magnificent gardens. The meticulously landscaped greens took over 150 years to design and remain the highlight of any visit to the estate. Beyond the variety of plant life, these gardens are adorned with enchanting statues and exquisite ironworks.
Spanning 47 acres, the gardens are divided into multiple sections, including a lovely rose garden and a functional kitchen garden, complemented by extensive walking paths boasting over 200 varieties of trees, flowers, and plants.
Following the devastating fire in 1974, the once-remarkable mansion remained inaccessible for many years. It finally reopened in 1996, albeit without the original grandeur. The interiors are now devoted to showcasing Irish craftsmanship, featuring many small shops selling handmade items from across the country. Despite the loss of the original interior, the Palladian mansion still provides a picturesque backdrop amongst the manicured hedges.
Additionally, children will be enchanted by Tara’s Museum of Childhood, which houses Ireland’s largest dollhouse along with a myriad of charming doll-sized furniture and accessories.
Beyond the formally designed gardens lies a wilder area; the Powerscourt Waterfall is celebrated as one of the most stunning cascades in Ireland. Notably, it also holds the title of Ireland’s tallest waterfall, cascading down a dramatic rocky mountainside. This natural wonder is situated about four miles away from the main gardens.
The extensive estate grounds include the Powerscourt Golf Club, which features two 18-hole courses. Guests can also enjoy traditional Irish cuisine and tea at the Terrace Café, located in the main Powerscourt building.

Powerscourt Estate is conveniently located just 12 miles (20 kilometers) from downtown Dublin, making it an ideal countryside escape that is easily accessible. Numerous private tour companies offer half-day visits to this enchanting location.
The estate is situated just outside of Enniskerry village, easily reached from Dublin via the N11. For those opting for public transportation, Enniskerry is accessible through the 185 bus route, with a short walk leading to the estate.
Tickets for the garden can be purchased directly on-site for 10 euros. The Powerscourt waterfall and nature park, located four miles away, requires a separate admission fee (6 euros for adults).
For a leisurely experience, the Powerscourt Hotel offers luxurious accommodations with 200 rooms and a Palladian style inspired by the original manor house.
