Summary
Dubai isn’t all about skyscrapers and sand dunes. Situated on the edge of the Arabian Gulf, this multitasking UAE destination is also a beachgoer’s paradise. With idyllic weather from October to May, Dubai’s pristine beaches have become one of its major drawcards. Take your pick of family-friendly stretches with gentle waves, private clubs with pampering on tap, free things to do, and top spots for surfing and watersports in our guide to the 10 best beaches in and around Dubai.
Tips on Visiting Dubai’s Beaches
While the dress code is more relaxed on Dubai’s beaches than in other areas of the city, this is not the place to wear a thong bikini. Opt for a swimsuit that offers more coverage (board shorts, one-pieces, and regular bikinis are acceptable), and remember to cover up before you leave the sand. Moreover, topless sunbathing is strictly prohibited.
It’s important to note that summer and beach days do not go hand in hand in Dubai, where summer temperatures (June to September) hover around 110°F/43°C. Consequently, if beach days are a priority for your Dubai holiday, consider scheduling your visit for the cooler months.
Stay hydrated while enjoying the beach, but keep alcoholic beverages in your hotel room. Drinking alcohol outside of licensed bars and restaurants is against the law and can result in severe fines or even jail time.
1. Sunset Beach
Backdropped by the sail-shaped Burj Al Arab, Sunset Beach sits between the Arabian Gulf and Umm Suqeim Park (it’s also known as Umm Suqeim Beach). This pristine white-sand beach is a favorite among families and a must for selfies as the sun goes down. Sunset Beach features washrooms, showers, and changing cubicles, plus Smart Palms that provide free Wi-Fi for beachgoers. For those looking to catch a wave, it’s also Dubai’s only real surfing beach, with small to medium swells that are perfect for beginners.
2. Kite Beach
A five-minute drive to the north brings you to Kite Beach, named for the countless kitesurfers who take to the sea and skies. This is the prime spot in Dubai for watersports, including wakeboarding, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding. On the soft sand, play beach tennis or volleyball, or simply unwind on your towel and soak up the sun, stunning views of the city, and complimentary Wi-Fi. Kite Beach is well-equipped with washrooms and changing facilities, along with cafes and food trucks serving a variety of dishes.
3. La Mer
Further north, in the heart of Old Dubai, you’ll discover the city’s latest beach development, La Mer. This vibrant dining, shopping, and entertainment precinct offers the perfect day by the sea, with an array of eateries, colorful cabanas for hire, Instagram-worthy art installations, a trampoline playground for children, and the newly opened Laguna Waterpark, featuring five waterslides, a Lazy River ride, and a surf machine. Don’t miss the chance to relax in one of the in-water hammocks, positioned just off the shore.
4. The Beach, JBR
Sandwiched between the Arabian Gulf and Dubai Marina to the south, The Beach at JBR offers a perfect combination of restaurants, retail, and beachfront fun. For those looking to get active, there’s a cushioned jogging track, an outdoor gym area, and a watersports hub. For a more relaxed experience, spread out your towel on the soft sand, rent a sun lounger or cabana, or claim a patch of lawn at the southern end of the strip. Outside the hotter months (May to September), The Beach hosts open-air markets and free yoga sessions on four mornings each week. For iconic Dubai photography, visit at sunset to capture camels against a backdrop of skyscrapers and the Ain Dubai observation wheel.
5. Black Palace Beach
One of Dubai’s best-kept secrets, Black Palace Beach is situated between Palm Jumeirah and Burj Al Arab in Al Sufouh. Simply follow the track leading from Jumeirah Beach Road between the Royal Fortresses to locate this low-key beach that’s popular among locals and expats. Although facilities are minimal, with no changing rooms or sunbeds available, this contributes to its charm. It’s no wonder it’s often referred to as “Secret Beach.” Keep an eye out for Sheikh Mohammed’s luxury yacht, which is frequently moored just offshore.
6. Al Mamzar Beach Park
To the north of the city, near the Dubai-Sharjah border, lies Al Mamzar Beach Park. For a small entry fee, you can choose from five sandy beaches, swimming pools, playgrounds, and 260 acres of gardens. This family-friendly recreational area also features 25 picnic spots equipped with barbecues, allowing you to enjoy lunch or dinner after enjoying water activities, jogging, or biking (bicycle rentals are available). Children will appreciate the scenic train that travels through the park, and families may opt for a beach cabin or air-conditioned chalet for the day. It’s important to note that Mondays and Wednesdays are Ladies Days, when males over the age of four are not permitted to enter.
7. Riva Beach Club
If you’re willing to spend a bit more, experience luxury at one of Dubai’s exclusive beach clubs. While many beaches on Palm Jumeirah are reserved for hotel guests, Riva Beach Club offers reasonable day passes (rates may vary with the seasons), which often include complimentary drinks and other perks. Take a refreshing dip in the warm turquoise sea, relax in the chilled pool (especially refreshing during the peak summer season), or simply lounge on a sunbed with a delicious cocktail in hand. A Mediterranean restaurant, gazebo bar, and resident DJs enhance the relaxed atmosphere.
8. Nikki Beach
With stunning locations worldwide, from Miami to Marbella, Nikki Beach Dubai is a premier destination for socializing and relaxation. Nestled on the far side of Pearl Jumeira, this upscale beach resort features a stretch of palm-lined beach, dazzling white decor, and a turquoise pool complete with a swim-up bar. Note that this exclusive venue is reserved for adults; individuals under 21 are not permitted.
9. Saadiyat Beach Club, Abu Dhabi
Located just over an hour’s drive south of Dubai, in the UAE capital of Abu Dhabi, you’ll find one of the region’s most breathtaking private beaches. On Saadiyat Island, Saadiyat Beach Club boasts five miles of sugar-white sand leading into the azure sea. From your sun lounger, keep an eye out for dolphins and turtles swimming in the inviting waters. Beyond the beach, there’s a relaxing pool area surrounded by cabanas, a men’s grooming salon, and a state-of-the-art gym.
10. Al Khan Beach, Sharjah
In the emirate of Sharjah, directly north of Dubai, lies Al Khan Beach. This public beach is a must-see for sun-lovers and thrill-seekers alike, offering kitesurfing, parasailing, waterskiing, jet boarding, and surfing lessons. Kids will enjoy the floating Aquapark and playground, while all ages will appreciate the beach amenities, including sun loungers, washrooms, and a cafe, making for a comfortable day on the sand.
