Moreover, the area is home to multiple coffee shops and a farmer’s market held during summer in South Shore Park, hugging Lake Michigan. Entertainment options are plentiful, including the restored Avalon Theater showcasing films and Alchemist Theatre for live performances.
Third Ward
The Third Ward is often compared to New York City’s SoHo neighborhood due to its charming boutiques, cafes, and diverse art galleries situated in historic warehouses. Each quarter, local artists participate in Gallery Night & Day, showcasing their work. The Milwaukee Public Market is a significant attraction, featuring vendors who offer everything from fresh seafood to award-winning Wisconsin cheese. The neighborhood’s scenic bridges give it a distinctly European ambiance, making it a perfect spot for art lovers to catch performances at Milwaukee Chamber Theatre and Skylight Opera Theatre.
Brady Street
This East Side neighborhood, named after its main drag, has deep historical roots linked to Milwaukee’s Italian immigrants. Today, visitors can easily find delicious cannoli or muffaletta at local favorites such as Peter Sciortino’s Bakery and Glorioso’s Italian Market. The bohemian atmosphere is perfect for enjoying a latte at either Rochambo Coffee & Tea House or Brewed Cafe. Additionally, dining options reflect the neighborhood’s diversity with restaurants like Easy Tyger and La Masa Empanada Bar. Shopping experiences range from unique hemp products available at Green Fields to gourmet wines at Waterford Wine Co., renowned for offering tastings.
East Town
East Town acts as the eastern edge of downtown Milwaukee and is home to some of the city’s finest dining establishments, like Bacchus. Moreover, the area boasts lively bars such as Taylor’s, known for its retro ‘70s vibe. Every Thursday in summer, visitors can enjoy Jazz in the Park at Cathedral Square, which features beautiful light displays in December and festive celebrations during Bastille Days each July. Entertainment options abound from Milwaukee Bucks games at the new Fiserv Forum to theatrical performances at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts.
Riverwest
Riverwest is known for its strong sense of community, covering the area between East North Avenue and East Capitol Drive, just west of the Milwaukee River. While many University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee students call this neighborhood home, young families and couples are also drawn to the area due to its progressive businesses like Riverwest Co-op Grocery and Café and Riverwest Yogashala. Furthermore, a farmer’s market is held on East Locust Street during summer Sundays. The neighborhood features the Woodland Pattern Book Center, a cultural gem that hosts readings and workshops by notable writers and poets.
Harbor District
If it’s been a while since you’ve visited Milwaukee, you might wonder “Where is the Harbor District?” This emerging area is located just 10 minutes south of downtown Milwaukee and is anchored by the UW-Milwaukee School of Freshwater Sciences. New condos are rapidly appearing alongside historic warehouses, which are now home to businesses such as Boone & Crockett, known for its bar and dedicated taco truck, as well as Tribeca Gallery Café & Books and Milwaukee Kayak Company.
Washington Heights
This West Side neighborhood, bordering Wauwatosa, is characterized by its bustling main street along Vliet Street, featuring shopping, dining, and entertainment. Valentine Coffee Co. debuted its first café here in 2013 next to the Times Cinema, which showcases a mix of vintage and contemporary films. Additionally, Maison offers exquisite French cuisine, while Wy’east Pizza brings a unique pizza experience that originated from an Oregon camper trailer. The neighborhood also includes Rainbow Booksellers, specializing in children’s literature since 1994.
Clarke Square
This South Side neighborhood is among the city’s most culturally diverse areas, featuring culinary delights such as paleta (popsicle) shops and restaurants inspired by Dominican, Asian, and Mexican cuisines. Many establishments are owned by immigrants, predominantly from Spanish-speaking countries. Art enthusiasts will appreciate the numerous murals scattered throughout the area. A local chain of Mexican grocery stores, El Rey, hosts a large deli renowned for affordable and delicious lunches and snacks.
Brewers Hill
Brewers Hill, named for the beer barons who settled here during the late 1800s, now features a blend of restored Victorian homes and modern condos along the Milwaukee River. The area has become popular among young professionals working nearby, including those at Schlitz Park and Manpower’s headquarters. Noteworthy dining options include View MKE, which offers stunning views of downtown Milwaukee. The neighborhood also hosts COA’s Skyline Music Series, a popular summer attraction in Kadish Park.
Story Hill
Story Hill, located just west of downtown Milwaukee, showcases charming craftsman bungalows. Story Hill BKC is part of a local restaurant group specializing in all-day meals featuring local ingredients. The establishment also includes a shop with a variety of wines, beers, and spirits. Thanks to its proximity to Miller Park (home field for the Milwaukee Brewers), Story Hill is dotted with bars, including Kelly’s Bleachers and J&B’s Blue Ribbon Bar and Grill.
