In general, spring and early fall are the best times to visit Austin. The long, hot summer usually releases its grip on Austin in early October, making it a great month for visitors.

October features events such as the Austin City Limits Music Festival, typically held on the first two weekends. Unlike SXSW, ACL doesn’t deeply impact the entire city but does increase traffic around Zilker Park, with city buses experiencing slight overcrowding. Another notable event is the Austin Film Festival in late October, which holds activities primarily in downtown Austin. Additionally, the Formula 1 Grand Prix takes place, creating a vibrant atmosphere downtown during race weekend.

Daytime highs in October typically hover in the 80s °F, and rainfall is infrequent. However, climate change may soon threaten October’s ideal weather profile, leading to concerns about higher temperatures and unpredictable rainfall patterns. For instance, in October 2018, a catastrophic flood event impacted areas northwest of Austin, ultimately affecting the city’s water supply.

March

Austin’s second-best weather month is March, although it can be unpredictable. The typical high temperature is a comfortable 72 °F, but cooler temps can linger, and occasional torrential rains may occur.

This month also hosts the South by Southwest Music Festival, which significantly affects the entire city. The most noticeable impact occurs downtown; however, concerts and events are widespread throughout the city. Some locals may choose to leave town to bypass the associated traffic and chaos.

April

April offers nearly perfect weather with highs in the low 80s °F. Nevertheless, there is an increasing risk of heavy rain, alongside potential challenges for allergy sufferers due to pollen from trees, grasses, and flowers. For those without allergies, this is a splendid time to explore the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center or experience the scenic countryside filled with wildflowers.

May

As temperatures climb in May, daily highs settle in the high 80s to low 90s °F. Consequently, flash flooding becomes a safety concern, particularly around central Austin near Lamar and 9th Street due to its proximity to Shoal Creek. However, when the sun is shining, May is an opportune time to enjoy swimming at Barton Springs or partaking in Austin’s myriad outdoor attractions.

Christmas Holidays

During the Christmas season, Austin transforms into a charming small-town atmosphere. Congress Avenue is adorned with garlands and sparkling lights, while the state capitol building showcases festive decorations. The annual Trail of Lights in Zilker Park is a cherished family tradition, allowing visitors to stroll through illuminated displays featuring beloved Christmas characters. Additionally, one of Austin’s iconic moonlight towers is decorated to resemble a giant Christmas tree, involving community participation through a whimsical circle-running tradition.
