Overview of Marrakesh
Colorful, chaotic, and steeped in history, the imperial city of Marrakesh is one of Morocco’s most popular destinations. Moreover, it’s an excellent base for exploring the rest of the country, especially due to its remarkable railway connections. From Marrakesh’s easily navigable train station, you can travel to other major cities including Casablanca, Fez, Tangier, and Meknes. As well as being incredibly efficient, Morocco’s trains are considered clean and safe. Tickets are also affordable, making this one of the most budget-friendly methods of traveling around the country.
Buying Your Tickets
Previously, purchasing Moroccan train tickets could only occur at your selected departure station. However, now you can strategically plan ahead by researching and paying for tickets on the website of the national railway operator, ONCF. If you’d prefer to wait until you’re in Morocco, trains usually have ample space, and acquiring tickets on the day of travel is generally manageable. Conversely, if you plan on traveling during peak periods—including public holidays and notably during Ramadan—it’s wise to secure your tickets in advance. Should you encounter difficulties booking online, feel free to reserve at the station a few days prior, either in person or through a hotel or travel agent.
First Class or Second Class?
Trains in Morocco are available in two options, both equipped with air-conditioning. The newer trains feature open carriages with seats arranged on either side of a central aisle, while older trains offer separate compartments with facing rows of seats. In the older configurations, first class compartments typically include six seats, whereas second class compartments provide eight seats, resulting in a more crowded environment. The principal difference between first and second class is that first class guarantees a designated seat, while second class seats operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Therefore, it’s advisable to consider whether a guaranteed seat or a more economical ticket is more important to you.
Additionally, some of the overnight schedules listed below pertain to sleeper trains, which provide “comfort carriages” featuring single beds to ensure you get a restful night’s sleep. Traveling at night is an effective way to save money since it reduces your need for overnight accommodation.
