Essential Guide to Traveling from Heathrow Airport to Central London

Located 15 miles to the west of London, Heathrow (LHR) is one of the world’s busiest international airports. Fortunately, if you need to travel into Central London from Heathrow Airport, there are several different options available, ranging from private car hire to public transportation.

Taking the Tube to Central London From Heathrow Airport

The Piccadilly Line connects all Heathrow terminals (1, 2, 3, 4, and 5) to central London via a direct service. Services run frequently (every few minutes) between around 5 a.m. and midnight (approximately) from Monday to Saturday, and from around 6 a.m. to midnight (approximately) on Sundays and public holidays. All of the airport stations are in Zone 6 (central London, by contrast, is zone 1). London Underground provides one of the most affordable ways to travel to and from Heathrow Airport; however, the journey takes longer than other options.

Taking Heathrow Express to Central London From Heathrow Airport

The Heathrow Express is the quickest way to travel into central London. It runs from terminals 2, 3, 4, and 5 to Paddington station. Trains depart approximately every 15 minutes, and tickets can be purchased on board (although buying in advance is advisable to save on fares). Please note that Travelcards and Oyster pay-as-you-go rates are not valid on the Heathrow Express.

Taking Heathrow Connect to Central London From Heathrow Airport

HeathrowConnect.com also operates a train service between Heathrow Airport and Paddington station, stopping at five intermediate stations in West London. Tickets for this service are cheaper than those for the Heathrow Express, but the travel time is longer. Services run every 30 minutes (and every 60 minutes on Sundays). Tickets must be purchased in advance, as they cannot be bought on board. Additionally, Oyster pay-as-you-go and Zone 1–6 Travelcards are valid only for travel between Paddington and Hayes & Harlington.

Top Tip: If you’re waiting for a train from Paddington on a Friday and are in the area before midday, consider taking a quick 5-minute stroll to see the Rolling Bridge.

Taking the Bus to Central London From Heathrow Airport

National Express operates a bus service between Heathrow Airport and Victoria Station every 15 to 30 minutes during peak times from terminals 2, 3, 4, and 5. Passengers departing from Terminals 4 or 5 will need to change at Terminals 2 and 3.

Duration: 55 minutes from Terminals 2 and 3. Journeys from Terminals 4 and 5 may take longer due to the need for a transfer.

The N9 night bus offers a service between Heathrow Airport and Aldwych, running every 20 minutes throughout the night. The fare can be paid using an Oyster card, making it the most economical option for traveling between Heathrow Airport and central London, although the journey can take as long as 90 minutes. Taking a Taxi to Central London From Heathrow Airport

You will usually find a line of black cabs outside each terminal or can approach one of the approved taxi desks. The fares are metered, but be cautious of extra charges for late-night or weekend journeys. While tipping is not compulsory, a 10% gratuity is customary.

Duration: Between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on traffic conditions.
