Need an island getaway for you and your dog? Look no further than Red Bud Isle. This 17-acre island sits in Lady Bird Lake, near Tom Miller Dam. You can simply drive across a short bridge and park on the island. There’s no admission fee, and the park is open from dawn to dusk.

Let Your Dog Frolic: There’s a small play area designated for dogs near the parking lot. It’s a good spot to relax if your pup is shy or unsure of having an entire island to roam. The main trail loops around the outer edge of the island, wide enough to serve as a play area. The trail itself is roughly a half-mile long; however, expect plenty of meandering along the way if you allow your dog to run free. The center of the island consists of dense brush, with smaller trails crisscrossing it. Your furry friend will discover three areas to explore: the main trail, the slightly elevated center, and the water. On hot summer days, the trail surfaces can become muddy from playful dogs entering and exiting the water, which is easily accessible at several points on the island.
Explore the Island: A spur off the main trail leads you to the island’s tip, adorned with twisted, gnarled exposed roots. While walking on them can be tricky for both humans and dogs, they offer a fantastic photo opportunity. From this vantage, you can also admire the luxurious mansions lining the cliffs above the lake.
Go Kayaking: If you’re dogless or your pet enjoys boats, there’s a small ramp for launching kayaks and canoes at Red Bud Isle. Note: As you approach Tom Miller Dam, the water begins to flow quicker with unpredictable patterns. If you’re not an experienced kayaker, it’s advisable to avoid this area. The remainder of Lady Bird Lake generally features calm, slow-moving waters.
How to Get There
There’s a small parking lot with a capacity of about 40 cars. The nearest alternative parking location is approximately a half-mile to the west on Lake Austin Boulevard, but walking from there can be hazardous due to the busy, narrow roads.
If the parking lot is full, consider dining at nearby options and then returning later for a spot.

Patience is also key, as local drivers may not be tolerant of slow-moving vehicles.
Hang by the Lake: If parking at Red Bud Isle is unavailable and you need a waiting spot, head to the nearby Walsh Boat Landing. This location is essentially a boat ramp surrounded by green space, offering beautiful views of Lake Austin. There’s ample room for you and your dog to stretch out, and you can enjoy watching boats come and go while perhaps having a picnic.
Go Hiking: A couple of miles north of Red Bud Isle lies Bright Leaf Preserve, one of Austin’s natural wonders. Dogs are not permitted, but you can join guided hikes throughout the year. This 200-acre preserve was collected over time by philanthropist Georgia Lucas, designed to preserve Austin’s unique flora and fauna for future generations.
Tee Off: Located conveniently close to Red Bud Isle on Lake Austin Boulevard, Lions Municipal Golf Course is an affordable, no-frills city-owned golf facility. Although proposals are in discussions to develop the site, locals are advocating to maintain this cherished course.
Hit the Water: If you don’t have your own kayak, consider renting at The Rowing Dock, positioned southwest of Red Bud Isle near Mopac Highway. Canoes and stand-up paddleboards are also available for rent. Additionally, the Rowing Dock hosts guided excursions to witness the bats on Lady Bird Lake during daylight and fireworks on July 4th. Adjacent to Hula Hut, Abel’s on the Lake provides a two-story dining experience that includes both indoor and outdoor spaces. Built from an old lake lodge, County Line on the Lake is a rustic and family-friendly destination known for its Texas-style barbecue, including scrumptious ribs and brisket. Portions are generous; don’t forget to leave room for their famous peach cobbler. Family-style meals are also available, providing a fun way to share dishes among your group on large platters along with a scenic walk beside the lake, where turtles and ducks can be spotted.
