The Edison nightclub in Downtown LA attracts patrons with its stunning 1920s elegance juxtaposed against the authentic equipment of LA’s first private power plant. Offering exquisite food, intriguing cocktails, and engaging DJs, it is undeniably one of the most captivating bars in Downtown LA, and indeed in the entire city.
The venue may have steep prices, particularly for cocktails; however, it features a commendable happy hour menu that offers great value. Additionally, the food surpasses that of many trendy eateries nearby, boasting a comprehensive dinner menu alongside snack options. This unique setting creates an enjoyable atmosphere suitable for dates, gatherings with friends, or business meetings.
Operating Wednesday through Saturday, the Edison typically sees larger crowds on Friday and Saturday nights, making it a lively time if that’s your scene. However, if you’re seeking a more relaxed environment after attending a show or concert downtown, Wednesdays and Thursdays present the ideal opportunity. Their happy hour from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday through Friday is highly recommended, with Wednesday hosting a jazz night that starts at 7 p.m.
A minimum expenditure is required per person for table service—$25 on weekdays and $50 on weekends. Therefore, if you’re planning to indulge in dinner and have two or more $14 cocktails, reserving a table is advisable to avoid waiting in line.
2. Environment
On weekdays, entering the Edison, located in an alley near 2nd and Main, feels akin to discovering a hidden speakeasy. Conversely, weekends reveal a queue making the entrance clear. Upon entering the alley, ornate wrought iron gates and glass windows hint at the smoking area within, with the entrance located at the far end.
Inside, the street level houses only the smoking lounge and a couple of wing-back chairs for relaxation. The main club area is situated down a three-story staircase. The venue is segmented into various atmospheric settings framed by brick and concrete. The main stage area to the right of the stairs showcases a large screen displaying classic black-and-white films, accompanied by smaller screens and a DJ booth adjacent to a medium-sized dance floor. To the left, a collection of intimate curtained brick alcoves and rooms reminiscent of a steampunk gentleman’s club features luxurious leather seating alongside electrical generators. Each significant area boasts its own bar.
A unique aspect of the decor includes a communal fountain-style wash basin serving both men’s and women’s restrooms, positioned in a public area of the club.
3. The Crowd
The club enforces a commendably inclusive door policy, maintaining a strict dress code without discriminating against age, body type, or general appearance, in contrast to some Hollywood clubs. As long as you arrive dressed to impress and are ready to cover the applicable fee, you’re welcome. Interestingly, wearing sophisticated 1920s attire may expedite your entry during peak times.
Within the venue, guests encompass a diverse crowd, ranging from millennials celebrating milestones to industry executives enjoying absinthe in cozy library lounges. A common theme is that attendees are impeccably dressed, with many showcasing the retro glam flair of the 1920s.
4. The Menu
Drinks: The Edison is famed for its vintage cocktails like the Pimm’s Cup and signature concoctions such as The Edison—a blend of Woodford Reserve Edison Barrel Bourbon, pear cognac, lemon, and honey—as well as the Dead Man’s Hand, incorporating double rye whiskey, brown sugar, sarsaparilla, and bitters. The Happy Herbie combines Templeton Rye Whisky with baked apple bitters, honoring Disney Imagineer Herbert Ryman.
The bar features a curated selection of spirits, premium beers, and a short yet distinguished wine list, with the champagne list notably longer. The winged Absinthe Fairy circulates the club with a cart of glowing absinthe, providing guests an opportunity to sample this unique offering.
For those abstaining from alcohol, a variety of custom alcohol-free cocktails is available.
Food: The Edison’s comfort food menu encompasses a delightful range, from flatbread pizzas and grilled cheese to pulled pork sandwiches, steak, prawns over grits, chicken and waffles, and braised short ribs. Snack options include Devil and Angel Eggs (deviled eggs with caviar), sliders, an exquisite truffle and parmesan mac & cheese, alongside healthy salads and pan-fried dessert sandwiches. Enjoying food and drinks in this distinctive setting makes for a memorable experience.
