Most of Cancun’s attractions involve the sea and sunshine, but if you’ll be traveling to Cancun during the rainy season (roughly June through November), it’s likely the forecast will show some rain for your trip. Don’t be overly worried: Unless there’s a hurricane or tropical storm, it will probably only rain for a short time, and you’ll be able to return to enjoying the sun quickly. On those rainy days when you’re unsure of what to do, here are some activities you can enjoy in Cancun, rain or shine.
2. Visit the Maya Museum
Right in the center of the Cancun hotel zone, you’ll find a modern museum that’s perfect for learning all about the Maya civilization that developed in this area. The museum houses Mayan artifacts discovered throughout the state of Quintana Roo along with interactive exhibits. With corridors of preserved pieces and a wealth of information, a museum visit is a perfect pastime on a rainy day. If the sky clears for a bit, you can go outside and see the San Miguelito archaeological site, a small Maya site located on the museum grounds.
3. Explore Underground
Stormy weather is no deterrent to exploring underground. You can learn about the Yucatan Peninsula’s geology and ancient history by visiting the caves and underground rivers at Río Secreto. This unique guided cave tour lets you walk, wade, and swim along paths that wind through rocky natural formations and breathtaking underground caverns. This natural reserve is located just south of Cancun, near Playa del Carmen.
4. Get a Spa Treatment
If you can’t bask in the sunshine, you’ll have to find another way to relax. Luckily, Cancun boasts many excellent spas where you can be pampered in a completely soothing environment. Some of the spas even offer treatments based on traditional Mayan therapies. Options include a temazcal, a chocolate body scrub, a massage, or a facial—whatever treatment appeals to you the most.
5. Go Shopping
If you’re seeking souvenirs or gifts for friends back home, you won’t be disappointed by the shopping options in Cancun. Upscale malls like Luxury Avenue feature high-end boutiques that carry renowned designer brands, including Burberry, Cartier, Coach, and Fendi. However, if you’re looking for something more authentically Mexican, head to downtown Cancun’s traditional market, where you can haggle for souvenirs or enjoy a snack while waiting for the skies to clear.
6. Take a Cooking Class
Instead of feeling down about the rain, you can use the time to learn how to prepare some of your favorite Mexican dishes. Cooking skills are always useful, and besides learning, you’ll enjoy sampling delicious cuisine. 7. Sample Some Tequila
Tequila is possibly Mexico’s most famous export, and it’s well-known for more than simply being a shot at parties. To gain a real appreciation for fine tequila, it’s advisable to sample various types and learn about the production process. La Destileria restaurant, located in the Cancun hotel zone, offers over 100 different varieties of tequila, accompanied by a tequila expert who will explain the subtle differences. Remember that fine tequila is meant to be sipped—a perfect way to spend a rainy day.
8. Hit the Casino
So maybe you’re experiencing less-than-ideal weather, but perhaps lady luck is waiting for you at one of Cancun’s casinos. The Grand Oasis Cancun opened the destination’s first resort casino in April 2017. At the Red Casino, you can try your hand at games of blackjack, roulette, and poker, or test your luck on various slot machines. If you’re keen to catch a big game, you can do so on one of the large screen TVs. Additionally, there are local options, including the Dubai Palace Casino and Casino Palace, both situated in downtown Cancun, as well as the Playboy Casino in the hotel zone. If you choose to visit, be sure to carry Mexican pesos and an I.D. card, decide in advance on your spending limit, and reserve sufficient cash for a taxi back to your hotel.
