Colosseum Overview

Also known as the Flavian Amphitheater, this ancient arena was the site of countless gladiatorial battles and bloody wild animal fights. Important Security Information

As of April 2016, security measures at the Colosseum have been heightened. All visitors, including ticket holders with “skip the line” access and guided tour participants, must pass through a security check, including a metal detector. Consequently, the security line can be quite lengthy, with wait times exceeding one hour; therefore, plan accordingly. Additionally, backpacks, large purses, and luggage are restricted from being brought inside the Colosseum.

Visiting Information

Location: Piazza del Colosseo. Accessible via Metro line B, Colosseo stop, or Tram Line 3.

Hours: Open daily from 8:30 AM until one hour before sunset. Closing times vary seasonally, ranging from 4:30 PM in winter to 7:15 PM from April through August. Last admissions occur one hour before closing. The Colosseum is closed on January 1 and December 25, and opens at 1:30 PM on June 2.

Admission: 12 euros grants entry to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, valid for two days with a single entrance to each site. Admission is free on the first Sunday of each month.
