Explore the Stunning Kaaterskill Falls Hike

Directions to Kaaterskill Falls

The entrance to the trail leading to Kaaterskill Falls is located on Route 23A west of the town of Palenville, New York. To access Route 23A, take the New York State Thruway at exit 21.

You’ll find a small parking area on the south side of Route 23A, approximately 3.5 miles west of Palenville. Be cautious as the parking lot fills quickly, often requiring roadside parking. Once parked, you will walk downhill back toward Bastion Falls, where the trailhead for Kaaterskill Falls is found. This is just a five-minute walk, but be alert as Route 23A is narrow and winding.

Prelude to a Waterfall

Although smaller than Kaaterskill Falls, Bastion Falls serves as a lovely prelude to the dramatic cascade hidden deeper in the forested Catskills. It’s worth taking a moment to enjoy the beauty of Bastion Falls, which can be appreciated from Route 23A, making it accessible for those who may not hike to Kaaterskill Falls.

The Hike to Kaaterskill Falls

The hike to Kaaterskill Falls is often described as “easy,” but “moderate” is probably a more accurate representation. Spanning only half a mile each way, the hike itself is not overly long. However, the steep terrain includes rocks, tree roots, and slick patches, especially in spring and fall when ice can linger.

When navigating the trail, be mindful of your surroundings; hiking in proper footwear is essential. Although some attempt the hike in flip-flops, sturdy shoes are highly recommended. Travelers should pack essentials, including sunscreen, bug spray, water, and a camera to capture the stunning views upon reaching Kaaterskill Falls.

A Double Delight

Kaaterskill Falls is notable for being New York State’s highest two-tiered waterfall, featuring a spectacular double drop that includes a 175-foot upper falls and an 85-foot lower cascade. For optimal views, visit in spring, as summer conditions can reduce the water flow significantly.

For the Daring…

While most visitors enjoy the best views from the base of the falls, adventurous hikers can choose to climb the steep trail to the upper tier. However, this is not without risk; previous climbers have encountered accidents, emphasizing the importance of safety. It’s advisable to appreciate the waterfall from safe vantage points and cherish the experience, just as the renowned Hudson River School painters did before you.
