Summary
Introduction to Belogradchik
The Belogradchik Rocks (also spelled Belogradshick or Belogradschik) are one of the natural wonders of Bulgaria. These huge reddish limestone and sandstone rocks tower over the small town of Belogradchik and form part of the walls of the Belogradchik Fortress, which was first built by the Romans about 100 AD.
Danube River cruises in Eastern Europe often include a half-day at Belogradchik from Vidin, allowing travelers to stroll through the town and explore the magnificent Belogradchik Rock formations. The view from the top is nothing short of spectacular, and knowing that many of the old steps date back to Roman times enhances the experience. Visitors with mobility challenges can still enjoy the breathtaking sights from a vantage point near the coach parking area at the fortress entrance.
Exploring the Rocks
At first glance, one might think these photos were captured in the Southwestern part of the USA, until the Roman walls and Bulgarian signage come into view!

Navigating the Fortress
Visitors to the Belogradchik Rocks must ascend numerous steps and ladders to reach the top; however, the panoramic view from above is undoubtedly worth the effort. The fortress itself exudes historical significance, providing insight into Bulgaria’s rich past and architectural evolution.
Stunning Views
The views from the top of the Belogradchik Rocks are breathtaking, offering clear perspectives of the surrounding landscapes, which are ideal for nature photography and scenic adventures.
