After spending a few days aboard Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas, which launched in 2015, it was clear this 16-deck behemoth was designed to cater to families rather than couples seeking a honeymoon or romantic getaway—unless, of course, they bring the kids along.
Although there were few children on a preview sailing, it wasn’t difficult to envision the joyful sounds likely to resonate from children as they explore this floating amusement park.
Anthem of the Seas offers exciting experiences, including “skydiving” in a wind tunnel, surfing on a Flowrider simulator, and ascending in a capsule that elevates passengers 303 feet above the ocean.
Much of the public areas feature pools and hot tubs. However, on sea days, some rain may occur. Therefore, the indoor SeaPlex center entertains guests with bumper cars, a flying trapeze, an indoor roller skating rink/soccer field, ping-pong, foosball, video games, and more.
Conversely, there are various aspects of Anthem of the Seas that even seasoned travelers may adore.
Sky Loft Suites are for Lovers
Out of 2,090 staterooms on the ship, more than 1,500 come equipped with a private balcony, the ultimate luxury for cruise passengers.
Since Royal Caribbean aims to maximize space and revenue, there are 375 inside cabins with a “virtual balcony,” a floor-to-ceiling video projection of the outside view. Such virtual options might disappoint, as a balcony allows guests to see—and feel—the ocean firsthand.
On the higher end of the cost spectrum, the ship’s new, two-story Sky Loft Suites are even more suitable for a romantic getaway than standard balcony cabins, particularly for couples who value extra space.
A staircase leads to the “royal king” bed (slightly smaller than a king-size bed) and a romantic balcony view. Downstairs, guests can enjoy a small living/dining area. Sky Loft Suites feature two bathrooms and two balconies, including a side balcony with a swing chair overlooking the ocean that is undeniably appealing.
Spa on Anthem of the Seas
In the serene atmosphere of Vitality Spa on Anthem of the Seas, moments of tranquility are unlikely to be disrupted.
While the spa includes a couples treatment room, many couples prefer to indulge in individual sessions for greater relaxation.
There’s also a beauty salon and a spacious fitness center onboard that offers Pilates and Yoga classes, alongside more intense activities such as Beach Bootcamp and TRX.
Stroll the Royal Promenade
The Royal Promenade on Anthem of the Seas, located on Decks 4 & 5, resembles an indoor shopping mall. Guests can select from pizza and pastries, or shop for apparel and logo souvenirs. If you forgot to pack warmer clothing, don’t worry—they have you covered.
Bvlgari on Anthem of the Seas
The Italian jewelry house Bulgari has crafted exquisite fine jewelry and watches since 1884, particularly known for its golden snakelike chains, Roman coin jewelry, and notable cabochon gemstones.
While you won’t find the most expensive and intricately designed pieces typically worn by celebrities, travelers can still purchase affordable treasures bearing the Bvlgari signature. Those who enjoy good fortune at the casino might want to take home a lucky charm for their significant other.
Art on Anthem of the Seas
Anthem of the Seas isn’t a floating art museum, but it features an abundance of art. For example, each elevator showcases an oversized graphic of an animal dressed flamboyantly.
On the Royal Esplanade, passengers can admire a shiny sculpture reminiscent of Anish Kapoor’s “Cloud Gate” in Chicago.
What delights the most are the kinetic artworks that change as viewers observe them. Some reflect the changing seasons, while others are whimsical and playful. Each encounter with a new piece offers a moment to share with companions.
Like many cruise ships, Anthem also boasts a small “art gallery,” selling framed pieces by lesser-known artists.
North Star on Anthem of the Seas
Experience breathtaking views on Anthem: take a ride on the North Star. This glass observation capsule ascends 303 feet in the air, rotating during a 15-minute sightseeing journey that offers spectacular views. Squeeze your partner’s hand as you gaze down—just make sure neither of you has a fear of heights!
Not Just for Nerds
Although it may not appear on the deck plan, a wonderful retreat for adults resides within Two70 at the rear of the ship. Upon entering, ascend the staircase on the port side to discover a small library filled with fiction, non-fiction, travel books, and games.
Beyond that space, a spacious business center is equipped with four widescreen Apple computers. This is an ideal chance to send a romantic message from the sea.
Celebrate the Sunsets
Are sunsets truly more beautiful and romantic when you’re at sea? Many believe they are, even when the views include a New Jersey parking lot next to the ship’s port. Yet beyond that, the magnificent skyline of New York City illuminated by a vibrant sunset is undeniable.
Pool + Bar on Anthem of the Seas
Henry James remarked that “summer afternoon” is one of the loveliest phrases in the English language. However, the term “pool bar” comes close in the context of cruise ship vacations.
The Anthem of the Seas boasts numerous pools, coupled with both a wading pool containing sunken loungers and several hot tubs. During the day, the water buzzes with activity. However, come sunset, as children settle down for the night, it transforms into a serene setting perfect for unwinding with a chilled beverage.
Sushi at Sea
Indulge in an upscale meal at Izumi (a la carte pricing), where the seafood is fresh, and there is a lovely table for two, allowing for ample privacy. Among the menu’s signature rolls, the Truffle Creamy Lobster Tempura Roll is particularly delectable.
The lobster tempura chunks, tossed in ponzu olive oil and spicy mayo with a hint of scallion and truffle oil, are so irresistible that you might find yourself savoring them separately before enjoying sushi.
Check out the Views from Two70
Deck 5’s Two70 serves as a multipurpose venue showcasing 270-degree views. Enjoy a drink at the bar while watching the world go by through expansive windows. Additionally, technology can transform this space into an entirely different environment, with theatrical screens covering the windows and projecting imaginative images.
Anthem of the Sea Weddings
Shipboard weddings have gained remarkable popularity. Although Anthem does not have a dedicated chapel, numerous indoor and outdoor venues are available for couples to exchange vows.
Royal Weddings is responsible for coordinating all weddings for the cruise line. Interested couples can explore available packages and customization options in this brochure.
The Wonders of Wonderland
Wonderland restaurant (at a premium price) introduces the concept of molecular gastronomy onboard.
Even the physical menu is unique; you receive framed parchment, a brush, and a small jar of water. As you “paint,” the menu reveals its selections. However, it’s primarily the staff who will guide your dining experience. After sharing any dietary preferences with the waiter, a series of courses will be presented, each accompanied by a brief explanation of ingredients and preparation.
Some dishes may be peculiar and not particularly palatable, such as an olive designed to mimic an eyeball, constructed from oil and served in a spoon of oil.
“Baby Vegetables in the Garden | Soil & Pebbles” features tiny, perfectly cooked vegetables, and the “soil” consists of a moist blend of pumpernickel and truffles. Caution is advised with the “pebbles,” which are chicken livers rolled in chocolate powder.
The highlight of the night is the 12-hour braised beef on the bone, noted for its tenderness, moisture, and rich flavor. Unfortunately, it arrives later in the meal, so you may be limited in your ability to savor each morsel.
For meat lovers: Make a reservation at Wonderland, but be selective with your dish choices and leave room for the delightful beef.
Take in the View from a Hot Tub
Once the kids are tucked away in their cabins, navigate to the Solarium and settle into one of the illuminated hot tubs. While they may not be private, they are positioned on a lower level than the bar, offering a relaxing atmosphere.
Prefer to stay dry? There’s a swing large enough for two young at heart.
If fortunate enough to sail out of the Hudson River as night descends, witnessing the magnificent New York City skyline and the Statue of Liberty is an incomparable way to embark on your journey.
