Summary of Tumpak Sewu Waterfall Visit
Tumpak Sewu waterfall is becoming famous as one of the most amazing waterfalls in East Java, and it may even be the coolest waterfall in all of Indonesia and Southeast Asia.
This waterfall is more like a thousand waterfalls combined, which explains its name that loosely translates from the local Java language to ‘many waterfalls.’
These falls cascade into a horseshoe-shaped jungle ravine, reminiscent of a scene from Jurassic Park. The end result is an unmissable natural wonder!
Tumpak Sewu is conveniently located for those on their way to Mount Bromo. This travel guide will provide details on how to get there, along with essential information for your visit!
Tumpak Sewu: The Thousand Waterfalls
Your adventure begins at a panorama point which serves as the main overlook for Tumpak Sewu Waterfall, allowing visitors to admire the falls from above. This viewpoint is exceptional, and having a drone to capture aerial shots significantly enhances your experience.
No hiking is necessary to enjoy the view from this overlook, which is just a short walk from the parking area. The waterfall is extremely photogenic, clarifying why it’s known as the ‘thousand waterfalls’ of East Java.
With a drone, you can even spot the majestic Mount Semeru volcano in the background. Aerial views showcasing the tree-like shape directly above the waterfall also offer a unique perspective.
From the viewpoint, there are two trails leading down to the waterfall; however, the path on the Lumajang (east) side is generally regarded as easier and safer.
Tumpak Sewu Waterfall Hike
It’s advisable not to linger at the overlook for too long—there’s still a stunning waterfall to see from below! The most favorable lighting conditions for photographs are in the early morning when the sun is low.
Proceed down the designated path for approximately 20 minutes to reach the bottom of the ravine. This path consists mainly of bamboo steps, complete with bamboo railings; while there are some precarious spots, it’s manageable. Just take your time and proceed with care.
If you are accompanied by children or older individuals, they should be able to navigate this section of the hike, although it’s wise to go slowly and assist them as needed.
Upon reaching the bottom of the ravine, it’s just a short 5-10 minute walk to reach the waterfall’s base, where the towering walls on either side highlight your small stature in comparison to the awe-inspiring view awaiting you.
There is a shallow stream to navigate, featuring a small bridge that spans part of it. After crossing the bridge and rounding the corner, brace yourself for a mind-blowing sight! The scale of the waterfall becomes overwhelmingly apparent, making you feel remarkably small.
There are numerous great spots for capturing photos near the waterfall; just keep in mind that the rocks are quite slippery. Any electronics brought within 100 meters of the falls are likely to get drenched.
It is highly recommended to carry a dry bag to protect your camera, drone, or other electronics between photo opportunities.
Stay safe and enjoy your visit! Overall, Tumpak Sewu Waterfall stands out as one of our favorite sights in Indonesia, living up to its name as the ‘thousand waterfalls’ of East Java!
Goa Tetes Waterfall
During your return from Tumpak Sewu, make sure to check out another waterfall in the same ravine called Goa Tetes. This can be seen by following a loop hike that leads back to the parking area.
Walk down the ravine for about 5 to 10 minutes, where you’ll come across a picturesque waterfall set against an orange rock wall. Continue onward, and you’ll pass a series of caves and other falls cascading down the rocks.
If time allows, exploring these caves can yield some intriguing photo opportunities.
Exercise caution, as the rocks in this area are very wet and slick. Keeping your feet dry is likely impossible, so focus on maintaining three points of contact and ensure any electronics are stored in a dry bag to prevent them from getting wet if you happen to slip.
As you near the end of the waterfall trail, a bamboo footpath leads upward and out of the ravine. Upon reaching the top, take a left and walk back towards the Tumpak Sewu parking area.
Congratulations, you have successfully completed the loop! Two remarkable waterfalls in one trip!
