Summary
Experience Grindelwald: A 4-Day Itinerary
As we hike through the landscape of the Swiss Alps, it feels as if we have entered a fairytale. Imposing mountains surround the slopes dotted with pretty chalets as cowbells chime in the distance. Welcome to Grindelwald, Switzerland.
I don’t think I have witnessed a more magical place on earth. Every turn offers one incredible view after another. Add fun and quirky adventures to the spectacular scenery, and you have the perfect vacation destination. We’ve been lucky enough to visit the Jungfrau Region of Switzerland three times, but it wasn’t until this past trip where we had four glorious days that we really had the chance to take advantage of all it has to offer.
Day 1 – Arrive Grindelwald
Where to Stay in Grindelwald
Arriving at the picturesque town of Grindelwald, we checked into the Romantik Hotel Schweizerhof Grindelwald. It is the perfect location for exploring the Jungfrau region as it is located close to the Grindelwald train station and is within walking distance of downtown. It also has magnificent views of the surrounding mountains with a beautiful spa and restaurant on site. The tranquility and beauty of the early morning hours make it an even more unique experience.
Afternoon: Glacier Canyon Grindelwald – Gletscherschlucht
After checking into our room, we drove up to the Gletscherschlucht (Glacier Canyon Grindelwald) to explore. You can catch bus 122 from Grindelwald directly to Gletscherschlucht. Glacier Canyon is located only 5 minutes from downtown Grindelwald.
Gletscherschlucht is one of the coolest attractions in Grindelwald, and you don’t want to miss seeing it. Visitors walk through a series of tunnels, walkways, and rocky outcrops as the Lütschine River roars through the 250 million-year-old canyon. This 870-meter long path is an extraordinary glacier canyon walk through high cliffs stretching up from the canyon floor.
There is also a 170 square meter spiderweb trampoline where you can bounce above the rushing water and stare directly down the center of the canyon.
If you want to be truly adventurous, there is a gorge canyon swing where you can leap off the 300-meter high cliff plunging into the canyon below. For more information on Glacier Canyon visit the Grindelwald website.
Evening Day 1
After exploring the canyon, head back to Romantik Hotel Schweizerhof Grindelwald for dinner. We had the half-board package, meaning breakfast and dinner were included, which is a great way to save money. The restaurant has an outdoor terrace with beautiful views of the mountains and sunset, making it the perfect choice for day 1 in Grindelwald.
After dinner, take advantage of the luxurious spa. There are plenty of spas in Grindelwald, and going to the spa is as Swiss as Gruyere Cheese. The spa at Romantik Hotel Schweizerhof was fabulous, featuring an indoor pool and a series of hot saunas, cold baths, ice foot baths, and ice rubs to soothe your muscles.
The icy cold foot bath spa was perfect to ease our aching feet each day after beautiful hikes in Grindelwald. When visiting Grindelwald in the summer, there is a lot of hiking involved, so the spa is a great way to unwind.
Day 2 – Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe
A buffet breakfast is included with a half-board stay at Romantik Hotel Schweizerhof Grindelwald, and we filled up on an array of delicious Swiss cheese and pastries before catching the train to Grindelwald Terminal, just outside the hotel.
Morning: Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe
With a Jungfrau Railways pass in hand, we hopped on the three-minute train journey from Grindelwald train station to Grindelwald Terminal. Grindelwald Terminal is a state-of-the-art ski terminal with a shopping center and restaurants. It is also the place where you catch the Gondola up to Eigergletscher before heading on to Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe.
You can purchase tickets from Grindelwald or Interlaken to Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe in advance at Jungfrau Railways. We highly recommend a Top of Europe Pass to allow flexibility for the weather. Passes start at three days for 239 CHF ($260 USD).
Eiger Express
From Grindelwald Terminal, take the Eiger Express to Eiger Glacier station. The Eiger Express is the newest gondola in the region, reducing travel time to Jungfraujoch significantly. It can take up to 4000 guests per hour up the mountain. Once you reach the Eigergletscher train station in just 15 minutes, it is time to transfer to the historic cog railway that takes you the rest of the way up to Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe.
Jungfrau Railway
This train journey is a must when visiting Grindelwald. The Jungfrau Railway has been operating since 1912, taking you to Europe’s highest railway station. This 35-minute journey climbs through history to the world’s highest train station at 3,454 meters (7723 feet). For tickets and reservations, visit the website for more details.
Aletsch Glacier
On your way to the top, there’s a five-minute scenic stop at the Aletsch Glacier – the longest glacier in Europe – offering excellent views of the 23 km-long (14 miles) glacier. After a short stop, it’s back on the train for the premier attraction. Don’t worry; you will see the glacier again from above.
Sphinx Observatory
Our first stop at Jungfraujoch was the Sphinx Observation Deck, where we boarded a high-speed elevator taking us up 108 meters (354 feet) in 25 seconds. Emerging outside to the viewing platform, we felt the cold wind hit our faces as an extraordinary view unfolded before our eyes. Jungfraujoch is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
From up here, you’ll see views of Italy, France, and Germany and breathtaking peaks, including Jungfrau Mountain and the Lauterbrunnen Valley with glaciers. We spent quite a while enjoying the 360-degree panoramic views.
Alpine Sensation
After savoring the views at the Sphinx Observation Deck, it’s time to go inside for the interactive displays. Step on the moving sidewalk that takes you through the history and the making of the Jungfrau Railway. Photographs lining the walls depict the construction of the railway and honor those who lost their lives making this engineering feat.
Ice Palace
The next stop is the Ice Palace, which begins with a walk through an ice tunnel under a tributary of the Aletsch Glacier, Jungfraufirn. The halls of ice, constructed in the 1930s, are constantly maintained, and ice sculptures are scattered throughout the 1000 square meters of tunnels.
Glacier Plateau
After exiting the Ice Palace, you can walk outside in the snow at 3451 meters. The Glacier Plateau offers another vantage point of the views below, perfect for a selfie with the Swiss flag at the top of the Alps!
Afternoon: Hike the Eiger Trail
After experiencing the high altitude, make your way back down to Eigergletscher Train Station to trek the iconic hiking trail in Grindelwald, known as the Eiger Trail. This trail begins at Eigergletscher Train Station and results in Alpigen. It takes about two hours to hike (or three hours if you stop often for photographs).
The mostly downhill hike offers jaw-dropping views of the Lauterbrunnen Valley as you follow the Eiger North Face of Eiger Mountain, a popular spot for rock climbers.
Search for the Grindelwald Cows
We have hiked this trail twice, and both times, we encountered the charming Grindelwald Cows. Listen for the cowbells echoing through the valley, and you just might come across a herd basking in the sun. They are friendly and photogenic, perfect for pictures.
Continue to Alpigen, where you can take the train back to Grindelwald.
Evening – Explore Grindelwald and Enjoy the Spa
After completing your hike, take a leisurely walk through Grindelwald town. There are plenty of shops and restaurants for stocking up on hiking gear or enjoying a drink while taking in the views. We returned to Romantik Hotel Schweizerhof Grindelwald for dinner, courtesy of our half-board package.
Tonight, pack an overnight bag for the next day of adventures. You are going to be spending the night at Grindelwald First.
What to Pack for Grindelwald First:
- Warm clothes and layers as you will be hiking to altitudes of up to 2,265m (7,431 ft).

- Credit card or cash for restaurant purchases.

Day 3 – Grindelwald First
Day 3 is unforgettable, taking you to one of the premier scenic lookouts in all of Grindelwald, perhaps all of Switzerland. Today, check out of your hotel in Grindelwald, store your extra luggage at the hotel, and make your way to the First Gondola (Grindelwald Firstbahn) located in the heart of the village. Grindelwald-First is your ticket to adventure in Grindelwald.
Where to Stay on Grindelwald-First
You will stay at Berggasthaus First, which offers dorm rooms, double rooms, and family rooms. Be sure to book in advance.
Lake Bachalp Hike (Bachalpsee)
After taking the gondola up first thing in the morning, start the family-friendly and accessible Bachalpsee Lake hike directly from the top of the gondola. This 3km hike is suitable for families and beginners, taking about an hour to complete with a gentle slope of only about 150 meters (500 feet) elevation gain. If the weather is good, take time to enjoy the stunning views from every angle.
Walk to the back of the second lake to sit on a bench with a journal for your impressions of Lake Bachalp and the mountain vistas. It’s an ideal photo spot. If the weather is overcast, you can return without losing hope, as you’ll have another chance tomorrow since you are staying overnight.
Before your adventures, Restaurant First is a great place to grab lunch. You can enjoy a filling raclette and refill your water bottles at the fountain nearby.
Grosse Scheidegg
From here, some people hike on to Grosse Scheidegg, which takes at least 6.5 hours from Bachalpsee Lake, so ensure you have ample time.
Grosse Scheidegg is a picturesque mountain pass linking the towns of Meiringen and Grindelwald, known for stunning views of the surrounding Alps, including the impressive Wetterhorn, Schreckhorn, and Eiger peaks.
Grindelwald First Adventures
Grindelwald offers various activities to enhance your hiking experience. With the Grindelwald First Adventure Package, you can descend the mountain in style.
First Flyer – Adventure Ride
The First Flyer is an exhilarating experience, starting at First Station and racing to Schreckfeld Station at speeds up to 84 km/h on a zip line. While it might look intimidating, once you take off, it’s pure fun!
First Glider
Unfortunately, the weather turned during our visit, preventing us from experiencing First Glider. The glider pulls you backward 800 meters at 72 km/h before releasing you to glide forward at speeds up to 83 km/h, providing a thrilling flight experience.
Mountain Cart Ride
Described as a cross between a go-cart and a winter sled, this mountain cart ride takes you from Schreckfeld to Bort Station. You’ll twist and turn your way down the mountain while enjoying breathtaking views of the Grindelwald Valley and the Bernese Alps.
If you have kids, staying around Bort Station will let them enjoy the playground, a unique jungle gym experience on the mountainside!
First Trottibike Scooter
After the mountain cart ride, it’s time for an unforgettable downhill excursion on a Trotti bike, a specially designed scooter with large tires. The downhill ride from Bort all the way to Grindelwald is exhilarating.
Back Up the First Gondola
As your day concludes, you’ll return the Trotti bike and head back up the gondola to unwind for your overnight stay at First, where the evening crowds have dispersed, allowing for solitude and serenity.
Berggasthaus First
Berggasthaus First offers family-friendly accommodation close to the mountain’s beauty, including dorms and private rooms. The half-board package includes dinner and breakfast, alongside outdoor terraces, bars, and access to First Cliff Walk by Tisson.
Grindelwald First Tissot Cliffwalk
If you haven’t yet experienced the First Cliffwalk by Tissot, now is the perfect time. At sunset, the steel walkway extends 45 meters (147 feet) over the valley, providing a heart-pounding view of 2000 meters below. You won’t want to miss this iconic attraction.
Day 4 – Mannlichen Hike and Harder Kulm Interlaken
After a peaceful night at Berggasthaus First, day 4 in Grindelwald begins. Make your way back to Bachalpsee for sunrise. Staying overnight is beneficial for catching magnificent views at dawn with fewer crowds. The weather can change swiftly at high altitudes, so having two chances can lead to the perfect experience.
After hiking back, enjoy a delicious breakfast included in your stay before taking the gondola down. You have about two hours to reach your next hike. Visitors in winter can enjoy skiing, gondola rides, and various attractions that remain open, making it a prime time to explore Grindelwald.
Mannlichen Hike to Klein Scheidegg
From Firstbahn, head to the Grindelwald train station. Use your Jungfrau pass to board the train to Grindelwald Terminal. Then hop on the Grindelwald – Männlichen gondola cable car, a 19-minute ride taking you to the summit.
Lunch at Berghaus Männlichen Hotel and Restaurant
Männlichen features a restaurant with a terrace serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It offers a great atmosphere and, like everywhere in Grindelwald, stunning views.
The Männlichen Hike to Klein Scheidegg
The hike from Männlichen to Klein Scheidegg is easy and mostly downhill, underlining its popularity. As you navigate the 5 km trail, you’ll be mesmerized by constant views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau mountains, lasting about 90 minutes (allow for 2 hours if you stop often for pictures).
Every hike in Grindelwald offers postcard-perfect moments, and the Männlichen to Klein Scheidegg hike is no exception, finally reaching Klein Scheidegg train station. From there, board back to Grindelwald Terminal for your next adventure.
Wengen-Männlichen Railway
The Wengernalp Railway, known as the Wengen-Männlichen Railway, connects Grindelwald with the village of Wengen, stopping at various scenic points. This railway provides easy access for tourists eager to discover both villages and enjoy the Swiss Alps.
Wengen is a car-free village renowned for its serene ambiance and charming architecture, making it a worthwhile stop if time permits.
Pfingstegg Rodelbahn – Toboggan Run
If additional adventure awaits, consider passing on the railway for the Pfingstegg Toboggan Run. Located at the recreational area, this fun ride can be accessed via gondola from Grindelwald, requiring a brief 15-minute walk from the station.
The 736-meter-long track winds its way down the mountain, featuring exhilarating curves, waves, jumps, and two thrilling spinning circles, allowing you to control your speed using the brake on the toboggan.
Harder Kulm Lookout in Interlaken
Interlaken, the largest town in the Grindelwald region, awaits your exploration. Board the train from Grindelwald Terminal to Interlaken for stunning views of Harder Kulm, the towering mountain over the town at 1322 m above sea level. The century-old funicular railway offers delightful scenery, especially when seated at the back for the best views.
At Harder Kulm, enjoy breathtaking views of the Swiss peaks along with the twin lakes of Interlaken: Lake Brienz and Lake Thun. While you’re up there, savor a meal at the Panorama Restaurant. If you haven’t tried Swiss fondue yet, now is your chance. For more information on Harder Kulm, visit their website.
After taking in the beautiful sights and enjoying an unforgettable meal, spend the evening in Interlaken along the peaceful waterfront of the Aare River. Make your way back to Romantik Hotel Schweizerhof for your final night in Grindelwald.
