A lot of people pop into Porto for just a day, be it before their Douro Valley River Cruise or on a day trip on their Portuguese adventure. Because this city is so compact, Porto is very walkable, making it easy to see many of its top attractions in just one day.
While we recommend at least a few days in Porto, it is possible to see a lot, as all the main attractions are located close to the city center. Therefore, we have created the perfect one-day itinerary to make the most of your short stay in this vibrant city.
One Day in Porto Itinerary
Porto, the second largest city in Portugal, boasts a walkable historic center paired with easy and affordable public transport options. Consequently, it is possible to see a lot in a short time.
If you only have one day in Porto, we suggest using Uber to get around. We found them to be very reliable and affordable. Furthermore, if you plan on visiting many attractions and using public transport, consider the Porto Card for added convenience.

Livraria Lello
Harry Potter fans will want to head straight to Livraria Lello to kick off your itinerary. Call an Uber from your hotel to R. das Carmelitas for your entry into this world-renowned bookstore. It is rumored that the enchanting staircases were inspired by those at Livraria Lello, but JK Rowling denies this connection. Regardless, this bookstore features an impressive section dedicated to the beloved series, creating a magical experience for visitors.
Many include this stunning bookstore in their Porto itinerary, yet a lack of planning often leads to missed opportunities. Ensure to book your timed entry in advance. The bookstore opens at 9:00 am, and booking a “golden ticket” allows you to skip the line and receive a free book. Even with this ticket, arriving at 8:00 am is advisable.
Igreja do Carmo
Once you’ve finished at Livraria Lello, take a stroll to the nearby square to admire the iconic tiles of Igreja do Carmo. It features one of the most photographed walls of tiles in Portugal, making it an ideal spot for pictures. The square is charming yet bustling, with tours frequently stopping to discuss the beautifully adorned church.
Cafe Majestic
If you didn’t have breakfast at your hotel, consider stopping by Cafe Majestic for a meal. Alternatively, if you are looking for a more budget-friendly option, we enjoyed excellent breakfasts at Zenith Brunch and Cocktails and Restaurant Carlos Alberto, both located nearby.
However, for a unique experience, dining at the historic Cafe Majestic, touted as one of the world’s most beautiful cafés, is a must. This café has roots in the literary world, as JK Rowling reportedly penned parts of her first book there.
Igreja de Santo Ildefonso
Igreja de Santo Ildefonso is renowned for its stunning facade covered in 11,000 traditional Portuguese ceramic tiles. The view from the steps is magnificent, although some may choose to explore the interior filled with religious art.
São Bento Train Station
São Bento train station is a must-visit site, famous for its stunning blue tiles, which narrate stories of Portuguese history. Opened in 1916 on the grounds of a former monastery, it showcases panels of blue and white tiles that artfully depict historical scenes.
Mid-Day Lunch and Activities
Snack and Spirits at Mercado Do Bolhão
While in Porto, visiting one of its traditional markets is highly recommended. For lunch, head to Mercado do Bolhão, known for its authenticity. The neoclassical facade remains, while inside, you can sample a variety of local delicacies.
Wander through stalls offering fresh produce, meats, and cheeses, and savor authentic Portuguese flavors that pair perfectly with wine. You can also order a drink to enjoy as you explore the market.
Pastel de Nata
If you’re in the mood for a Pastel de Nata, make your way to the nearby Confeitaria de Balhão, known for having some of the best in the city.
Porto City Hall
A short walk from Bolhão Market leads you to Porto City Hall, a picturesque photo spot that shouldn’t be missed.
Cais da Ribeira
For a riverside experience, the Ribeira district brims with restaurants and outdoor cafes. This picturesque area, with its colorful buildings lining the Douro River, is a must-visit and a great spot to unwind.
Enjoy wandering the charming, narrow streets or take an Uber to the waterfront for a dose of local culture, outdoor markets, and delightful views.
Porto Cathedral
If you venture to the market, consider having your driver drop you off at Porto Cathedral for breathtaking views. Though it requires an uphill walk, the views of the river and city are worth the effort. This historic site has been a religious landmark since the 12th century and houses beautiful azulejos inside.
Afternoon Adventures
Walk Across the Ponte Luis I Bridge
Next, head to the district of Novo de Gaia by walking across the famous Ponte Luis I Bridge, where you can experience stunning views of Porto and Gaia.
After lunch, walking across the lower level of the bridge provides a close-up view, while the upper walkway offers panoramic views—just watch out for the trams that traverse this portion.
River Cruise on the Douro River
Once in Gaia, embark on a scenic river cruise to appreciate Porto’s stunning riverside scenery. The 6 Bridges Cruise, running for 50 minutes, presents a unique view of iconic landmarks and bridges, making it an experience not to be missed.
Port Wine Tasting at Vila Nova De Gaia
Gaia’s waterfront is home to renowned port wine cellars, and experiencing a tasting is essential while in Porto. While a guided tour can be informative, visiting the cellars independently can also be enjoyable. Opt for Calem for a convenient tasting experience or head to Fonseca and Taylor’s for a more refined experience without the crowds.

How to Get to Porto
By Air: The main access point by air is Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport, located approximately 11 kilometers from the city center. The airport is well-connected through metro, bus, taxi, and ride-sharing services.
