Icelandair Baggage Policies: Everything You Need to Know

As Iceland’s flag carrier airline, Icelandair offers reasonably priced tickets from the United States to various European countries. If you’re flying Icelandair, you may be curious about their checked and carry-on luggage policies. There are several ticketing tiers with different luggage allowances and varying policies regarding extra bags.

Luggage Allowances

The number of bags you can bring on your trip, as well as their weight, depends entirely on the fare you’ve selected. Economy Light fares do not include a checked bag; however, you can purchase one as an add-on. Other economy fares generally include one checked bag weighing less than 50 pounds (23 kilograms). Saga Premium fares allow for two checked bags, each weighing less than 70 pounds (32 kg). Although there are no specific dimensions for height, width, and depth, the total size of a checked suitcase must not exceed 63 inches (160 cm), including handles and wheels. If your checked bag exceeds the weight limit, you’ll incur additional fees based on overweight limits.

Children aged 2 to 11 have the same baggage allowances as adults traveling in the same class. Infants can also check one bag, irrespective of class (excluding Economy Light). When flying with infants, a stroller or car seat is permitted, while a stroller that can be fully folded is allowed, free of charge, for children.

All travelers on Icelandair are entitled to a carry-on bag. This bag must not exceed 21.6 x 15.7 x 7.8 inches (55 x 40 x 20 cm) and must weigh less than 22 pounds (10 kg). Additionally, you may bring one small personal item, such as a purse or laptop bag, as long as it measures no more than 15.7 x 11.8 x 5.9 inches (40 x 30 x 15 cm). Passengers with Saga Premium Flex tickets might need to check their carry-on due to space constraints; however, it won’t count against the checked baggage allowance, and there are no additional fees.

Extra Checked Bags

If you wish to check an additional bag, you will incur an extra charge during check-in. It is advisable to purchase extra bags online prior to flying, as this can save you 20 percent, time, and money.

Extra Carry-On Bags

You could also take an additional carry-on, depending on your ticket type and requirements. For instance, if you are traveling with a baby, you are permitted to bring a diaper bag or check a stroller at no extra cost. Children are also allowed to bring their own carry-on and a personal item.

Restrictions

Like all airlines, Icelandair has restrictions on specific items you can pack in your carry-on or checked luggage. For example, you cannot carry liquids exceeding three ounces in your carry-on, and all liquids must fit inside a clear, one-quart plastic bag. Certain items, like baby food or specific medications, may be allowed on board, subject to health needs. For a comprehensive list of restrictions, it’s wise to check the airline’s website.

Other Airlines Rules

The luggage rules specified here apply only to Icelandair. If you have a connecting flight with another airline, it’s important to check their regulations, as they may differ, include additional fees, or have different size allowances. Different airlines often have varying policies on duty-free purchases made at the airport.

Traveling With Pets

Due to the limited number of pets allowed on each flight, it’s advisable to check with the airline beforehand if you are bringing your pet along. Reservations for pets must be made in advance, and you must provide your own crate (typically one animal per crate, unless both are small). A pet transport fee applies. Generally, animals are not permitted in the cabin unless they are service animals. Otherwise, they will be placed in a climate-controlled space within the cargo area of the aircraft.
