History
Canada Place is situated on land with significant historical importance, dating back to the early days of immigration. Originally part of the Canadian Pacific Railway, the pier served as a vital link between international trade ships—especially from Asia—and the transcontinental railway. During the late 1970s, planners envisioned this location as a convention center, cruise terminal, and hotel. Consequently, Canada Place became the Canadian Pavilion at the Expo ’86 World Fair, welcoming over five million visitors. After the expo, the pavilion was transformed into the Vancouver Trade and Convention Centre in 1987, thus becoming a legacy from the government to the people of Canada.
Things to Do
Exploring Canada Place offers visitors a variety of activities. A leisurely walk around the exterior reveals the stunning five sails, each standing 90 feet tall. These Teflon-coated fiberglass sails light up at night through the Sails of Light projection, showcasing seasonal colors. For capturing the city’s beauty at night, the North Shore or Stanley Park will grant visitors the best photo opportunities.
From the west promenade, visitors can engage with The Canadian Trail, allowing them to symbolically traverse Canada from east to west and north to south. This journey showcases thirteen sections representing the ten provinces and three territories with colorful glass and tile displays. Additionally, walking tours are conducted from May to September, offering insights into the trail.
Additionally, the north end of Canada Place hosts The Port of Vancouver Discovery Centre, where animated infographics and videos illuminate the port’s activities. Each day at noon, the Heritage Horns sound the opening notes of “O Canada,” a tradition maintained for the past two decades.
For an exhilarating experience, visitors should try the incredible FlyOver Canada attraction. This breathtaking flight simulation ride immerses participants in a sensory experience, including wind, scents, and mist. The journey starts with an audio-visual show about Canada, leading to an eight-minute exhilarating ride through stunning landscapes. How to Visit
Conveniently positioned on the Seawall, Canada Place can be reached easily by foot or bike from the central downtown area, notably at the foot of Howe and Burrard Street. Transit services connect buses and Skytrains to the nearby Waterfront Station, with the SeaBus providing access to the North Shore. For those driving, onsite parking is available at the 770-space WestPark, though it’s worth noting that it can get busy due to its proximity to the cruise terminal.
A visit to the Welcome Centre located in the Main Plaza is highly recommended (look out for the giant maple leaf). Operated by WESTCOAST Sightseeing, the Welcome Centre provides essential information about local attractions, ticket options, and events. This center is also conveniently located near bus pick-up points for hop-on hop-off tours and free shuttles to key attractions like Grouse Mountain (summer only) and Capilano Suspension Bridge on the North Shore (year-round).
