History of the Bugg Lights
The Bugg Lights have been a cherished tradition in the Albuquerque area for decades. Initially started by the Bugg family in 1970 in the Northeast Heights of Albuquerque, this festive display continued to grow over the years. However, as the display expanded beyond the capacity of their small street, it was temporarily retired until it found a new home at the Menaul School for several years. Today, it has blossomed once again at the Harvey House Museum in Belen.
What are the Bugg Lights?
The Bugg Lights showcase an impressive array of hand-made and hand-painted displays that whirl, twirl, and twinkle, captivating visitors of all ages. Iconic characters like Snoopy and his friends are part of various dioramas, alongside a delightful choir of singing penguins and a dazzling rotating Ferris wheel. Since relocating to Belen, the display has seen the addition of several new exhibits, including a large hot air balloon and Lady Bug Ranch, both generously donated by the Bugg family, who continue to enhance the festive atmosphere with additional lights and decorations.
The outdoor displays at the Harvey House have been thoughtfully created by volunteers, providing numerous photo opportunities for visitors. These settings are perfect for capturing memories to share on Christmas cards and social media. Additionally, vintage decorations adorn Christmas trees on both the first and second floors of the museum, contributing to the overall festive ambiance. The Harvey House has even enhanced some original pieces, including the singing penguins, which are now displayed on a giant iceberg.
Among the new additions is a nativity scene that holds historical significance, originally displayed atop the old flour mill in Belen over 75 years ago. The Belen Art League completed this scene, enriching the museum’s holiday exhibition.
In its inaugural year in Belen, the Bugg Lights attracted 10,000 visitors, and this year, an increase to 15,000 is anticipated. Local organizations enthusiastically volunteer to welcome guests, receiving 50 percent of the donations collected, while the remaining funds support the upkeep of the Harvey House Museum and the Bugg Lights display.

The Harvey House Museum showcases memorabilia from the Santa Fe Railway, illustrating its rich history supported by the famous Harvey girls. Located in the original train station that was part of the Fred Harvey chain, the museum features a large lunchroom, a newsstand, kitchen facilities, and sleeping accommodations for the Harvey girls who provided meals.
