History
Named after former Cleveland Mayor Thomas Burke (1945-1953), Burke Lakefront Airport was officially opened in 1948. This airport, located on the shores of Lake Erie, is owned by the City of Cleveland, similar to Cleveland Hopkins Airport. Burke primarily accommodates general aviation, military flights, and air taxi services, serving as a backup for Cleveland Hopkins. Brief operations by various commercial carriers have occurred at Burke, with the latest being Destination One in 2006.
General Aviation
Burke Lakefront Airport (BKL) is a fully certificated FAR Part 139 airport, featuring two runways measuring 6198 feet and 5198 feet respectively. The landing fees as of 2012 are structured as follows:
- $5 for single-engine aircraft
- $8 for multi-engine aircraft
- $10 for aircraft with a gross landing weight of 10,000 to 12,500 pounds
- $1 per 1000 pounds for heavier aircraft
Moreover, Burke’s FAA Air Traffic Control Tower operates 24 hours a day from Monday to Friday and from 7 AM to midnight on weekends.
