Overview of the History Colorado Center
The History Colorado Center enlightens visitors on the captivating history of the American West. Colorado became the 38th state on August 1, 1876, attracting a vibrant mix of gunslingers, gold seekers, and adventurers eager to stake their claims in the Wild West. At the History Colorado Center, you can explore the state’s colorful past through engaging exhibits and interactive displays.
This modern facility opened on April 28, 2012, at 1200 Broadway, having been renamed from its previous title, the Colorado History Museum. The original museum was relocated to make way for a judicial center. Visitors enjoy interactive exhibits such as a time machine, as well as reconstructions of significant historical sites including a silver mine and Bent’s Fort.
The museum’s aim is not only to educate but also to entertain. State Historian William Convery believes, “We see ourselves as the gateway drug to an interest in history.” The exhibits notably focus on eight Colorado communities, offering attendees a fascinating glimpse into aspects of the state’s historical narratives—from the excitement of ski jumping in Steamboat Springs to the heavy legacy of Japanese internment camps during World War II at Amache.
Interestingly, although Colorado has been a state for less than 150 years, its historical roots extend back thousands of years. The History Colorado Center showcases this vast history, representing a mere fraction of the “grand 10,000-year sweep of history.” Additionally, the museum highlights the state’s original inhabitants, the Native Americans, who comprised seven Ute bands prior to the arrival of white settlers.
This museum is closed on major holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day.
