Overview of Small City Travel in Europe
You could argue that small cities (cities of fewer than 250,000 inhabitants) offer the best experience for tourists. Sure, larger cities like Rome and Paris have more to do; however, the time it takes to get across town and learn about the best places within a larger city can waste a lot of a tourist’s time. You probably won’t find it too daunting to drive into the cities listed below. Train travelers can take a hotel near the train station, dump the bags, and go exploring on foot, seeing the whole city in a day. The list isn’t complete, but these are some of my favorite small cities in Europe.
Avignon, France

Despite not quite hitting the 100,000 mark in population, Avignon boasts a vibrant atmosphere, rich history, and a well-developed Provençal cuisine. Those who prefer even smaller destinations might enjoy Arles, which is easily accessible from Avignon. Obligatory stops in Avignon include the 14th-century Palace of the Popes and the 12th-century Avignon Bridge.
Where is Avignon? It forms a triangle with Marseille and Montpellier, close to the south coast of France.
Basel, Switzerland

Basel, a prominent city in Switzerland, sits at the crossroads of France, Germany, and Switzerland. This unique location contributes to its diverse cuisine, which can be savored in the city’s famous medieval guildhall restaurants. Notable attractions include Basel’s Carnival, its enchanting Christmas market, and the Museum of Fine Arts—the oldest public museum in Europe. Interestingly, at a population of only 166,000, Basel is Switzerland’s largest city.
Where is Basel? In northern Switzerland, it is located near the borders with France and Germany, and it has its own international airport with affordable flights available.
Bergen, Norway

Bergen may be one of the larger cities on this list, with a population of about a quarter of a million; however, the center feels much smaller and cozier. Bryggen, an area along the waterfront, is characterized by its historic buildings dating back to the time of the German Hanseatic League. Thus, it is a fascinating destination for history enthusiasts.
Where is Bergen? On the west coast of Norway, it is typically accessed by plane or cruise ship.
Bruges, Belgium

Where is Bruges? Situated in northern Belgium, Bruges is well-connected by train to other major Belgian cities.
Heidelberg, Germany

Heidelberg, located on Germany’s famed castle road, serves as an excellent base for exploration. This charming town features its own stunning castle and is known for its vibrant university atmosphere. The combination of historical significance and youthful energy creates a lively nightlife scene.
Where is Heidelberg? It lies halfway between Stuttgart and Frankfurt.
Lucca, Italy

Porto, Portugal

As the 2001 capital of culture, Porto offers a multitude of experiences. You can stroll along the river, Ribeira do Porto, stopping at local bars or restaurants. Additionally, you can ascend to one of Porto’s viewpoints for captivating city vistas before heading across the river to learn about the famous Port wine that fuels the city’s economy.
Where is Porto? Located in northern Portugal, it can be reached from both Lisbon and Santiago de Compostela in Spain.
Salzburg, Austria

Salzburg, Austria’s fourth largest city, is celebrated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is famously known as the birthplace of Mozart, who lived there from 1773 to 1787. Furthermore, it is renowned for its music culture, especially during the spectacular Salzburg Festival held every summer.
Where is Salzburg? Located in northern Austria, Salzburg is accessible via numerous budget flights, and it’s also reachable from Munich in Germany.
Oxford, England

Oxford is renowned as one of the UK’s most popular cities, housing England’s oldest university, which dates back to the 11th century. Experience the historical charm of the city by visiting The Ashmolean, England’s oldest public museum, which has recently expanded its exhibition space. Moreover, Oxford is a walkable city perfect for exploring on foot.
