Just forty minutes north of the Auckland Harbor Bridge, the Whangaparaoa Peninsula boasts some of the best beaches in the Auckland region. “Whangaparaoa” is Maori for “Bay of Whales” and it is not uncommon to spot dolphins and orca whales in the surrounding waters.
Whangaparaoa Location and Getting There
Whangaparaoa is situated on the northern outskirts of Auckland City, approximately 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) from the city center. This long and narrow peninsula features a series of stunning beaches on either side, with smaller suburbs nestled within. As Auckland expands, Whangaparaoa is quickly becoming integrated into the city.
To reach Whangaparaoa, you can drive along the northern motorway, exiting at Silverdale. Turn right, pass through the Silverdale shopping district, and take a right onto Whangaparaoa Road at the top of the hill. The drive from Auckland usually takes about 30 minutes; however, during rush hour, expect significant delays as the motorway can become congested.
Alternatively, if you prefer not to drive, consider taking a ferry from the terminal in central Auckland. The ferry journey takes approximately one hour.
Whangaparaoa Geography and Layout
The peninsula stretches over eleven kilometers (6.8 miles) and is relatively narrow. Both the northern and southern sides are lined with sandy beaches interspersed with rocky outcrops. At the far end of the peninsula lies the Shakespeare Regional Park, which is adjacent to a naval training area that is off-limits to the public. The primary areas of Whangaparaoa include:
- Red Beach, Stanmore Bay, Manly, Tindalls Beach, and Army Bay: These northern-side beaches provide views of the islands in the Hauraki Gulf, including Kawau Island and Little Barrier Island.
- Gulf Harbour: This area features a marina and residential development at the peninsula’s far end.
- Matakatia, Little Manly, and Arkles Bay: The beaches on the southern side offer views back towards Auckland City and out to Rangitoto Island.
- Shakespeare Regional Park: Found at the peninsula’s tip, this park offers beautiful walks and spectacular views of Auckland and the Hauraki Gulf. It is now a predator-free zone, safeguarded by a fence along the park’s boundary. Within the park, you’ll find two beaches – Te Haruhi Bay and Okoromai Bay.
- Tiritiri Matangi Island: Located four kilometers from the peninsula’s end, this island serves as a nature reserve, home to rare bird species such as the takahe. Regular ferry trips depart from both Gulf Harbor and downtown Auckland.

Swimming and Beaches: All of the beaches are suitable for swimming. The best beaches are located on the northern side, particularly Red Beach, Stanmore Bay, and Manly.
Sailing and Watersports: There are ample opportunities for sailing and various water sports at all the beaches, many of which have their own boat clubs.
Walking and Hiking: Numerous coastal walks are available around the rocky areas between beaches. It is feasible to walk nearly the entire perimeter of the peninsula, though access is primarily available a few hours on either side of low tide.
