La Fortaleza, designated a National Historic Landmark in 1960, is not only the oldest governor’s mansion in continuous use in the western hemisphere, but it also stands as one of the most beautiful. Its pale blue and white facade, tiled roof, patios, and wrought ironwork evoke the elegance of Spanish colonial architecture.

The History
La Fortaleza translates to “The Fortress,” a fitting name as it was completed in 1540 as part of a significant effort to strengthen the island’s defenses. However, its defensive capabilities were put to the test when it fell to the Earl of Cumberland in 1598 and Dutch Commander Boudewyn Hendrick in 1625.
In 1846, it underwent remodeling for complete use as the governor’s residence. Known also as El Palacio de Santa Catalina (Santa Catalina Palace), this historic site has been home to no less than 170 governors of Puerto Rico.
The Basics
La Fortaleza is situated at Recinto Oeste Street in Old San Juan, close to the San Juan Gate. The museum is open from 9 AM to 4 PM on weekdays, and guided tours are available every weekday, except on holidays. Entrance to the site is completely free.

La Fortaleza is easily walkable from many areas in Old San Juan, making it accessible for travelers. There are numerous local buses that drop off passengers at the Terminal Covadonga San Juan. From that terminal, it takes less than 15 minutes of walking to reach the site.
Don’t Miss
One of the most significant highlights within La Fortaleza is an ancient mahogany clock located along one of the corridors. Legend has it that before departing, the last Spanish governor of Puerto Rico paused before this clock and struck its face with his sword, effectively stopping time at the moment of Spanish rule’s end in the New World.
